Gary Neville embarks on his managerial career on Wednesday night as his Valencia side take on Lyon in the Champions League. And he has received a boost ahead of the game, courtesy of support from three-time European Cup winning manager Carlo Ancelotti.

“It’s a very interesting project for Gary Neville, but I respect his decision to take a big challenge in a new country,” said Ancelotti. “He is learning from Roy Hodgson with England and will have learned so much from Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, so it is good to see a young, English coach like Gary test himself like this. I wish him great success."

Oxford United chief executive Mark Ashton says hosting Premier League side Swansea is a fantastic FA Cup third-round draw for the League Two leaders and he believes the U's winning mentality can help them cause an upset.

Michael Appleton's side are unbeaten in their last nine matches.

"It is great news for the club and great news for the supporters. I think it is always good to get higher league opposition," Ashton told BBC Radio Oxford after Monday's draw.

"I'm sure Michael will want to pit his wits against Premier League opposition and he will be going out to win the game."

Former Manchester United assistant manager Rene Meulensteen has just been on BBC Radio 5 live Drive, talking about his ex-team and their Champions League chances against Wolfsburg on Wednesday. Here is what he had to say:

“I still think overall over the last few weeks, when I’ve seen Manchester United play, there’s still plenty of quality there without a doubt. I just miss some sort of freedom at times in the attacking third.

“They have to take their chances tonight. I don’t think it’s going to be a very open game from the start but United will get the chances and if they do they need to take them.”

One final bit from Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger on his side's crucial Champions League group game at Olympiakos:

"If we get through we will be dangerous for sure. You only have to look at the numbers in the group stage so far. We played with 10 men against Zagreb, we scored an own goal in our first home game, we have had 70% possession in every game.

"There are three super favourites. Anyone who goes through will have to chase them."

More from Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger on his side's crucial Champions League group game at Olympiakos:

"We have won everywhere in Europe so we know we can do it. The best way to do that is with a top quality performance.

"We are playing against a side who will be motivated but one who is not yet qualified. They can lose what they have and that can create a fear factor."

More from Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger on his side's crucial Champions League group game at Olympiakos:

"What is at stake is that we can qualify for the last 16 in Europe. We just want to give everything we have to qualify tomorrow. When you want to jump over a hurdle, you do not think what will happen if you miss the hurdle. If you fall down, then you respond."

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is addressing the media ahead of his side's crunch Champions League group game at Olympiakos.

The Gunners must win by two clear goals or beat Olympiacos on the head to head after the Greeks won 3-2 in London

"It is important that we focus on the performance and the goals will come. When the goal will come, I do not know. But when we play well we have a chance to score," said Wenger.

"We might need to be patient. We must go into the game with the desire to win, knowing that we have to get both parts of the game - attacking and defending - well."

It would appear that Arsenal full-back Mathieu Debuchy is not a happy man, chiefly because he's not getting enough first-team football. And with Euro 2016 looming, the France international wants to chat to boss Arsene Wenger about it.

"We talked about my situation in pre-season, I haven't talked to him recently, but we'll talk before the transfer window," Debuchy told French radio station RMC.

"I really need to play. [France manager] Didier Deschamps didn't call me for the last two games, so it's obvious, I've got to play more than I do, that's why I want to talk to Wenger soon.

"You can't be fit and mentally focused. And if I have to leave permanently or on loan to play, I will."

What do you think about the abuse of referees in football?

Open Flanker: I referee rugby, but could never referee football. Why would you sign up for something where referee abuse is institutionalised?

Will123bay: For me the answer is simple. The FA must give clear direction (of which they have failed to do so far). If ANY player abuses the referee in any way it is a straight red card offence. No ifs, buts or maybes.

Suprbull: Football referees are overrated. Some of them have never played football, and then wonder why they get abuse when they make appalling decisions.

Louis van GaalImage source, Getty Images

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal continues to court criticism for the style of his side's play, but he also has his supporters. Former Red Devils keeper Peter Schmeichel is currently in the latter camp.

"When we picked someone like Louis Van Gaal, who has a very big ego and personality, we also picked his way of playing football," said Schmeichel. "It is clear that for a certain period of time, while he is rebuilding the team, we have to accept playing in a certain way which perhaps isn't the Manchester United way.

"The objective of Van Gaal's first season in charge was to get back into the Champions League and he achieved that. This season, the goal was to do better and the team are doing better. Although the fans keep asking the team to attack, attack, attack, they understand that they need to give Van Gaal time."
