    In truth the result did not matter - Gent's victory over Zenit St Petersburg ensured the Spanish side would not have qualified even if they had won. 

    But anyway, Valencia's continental adventure will continue - in the Europa League.

    Will fate bring Neville back to his former club Manchester United at some point this season?..

    And speaking of which, it wasn't all good for fans of English football in the Champions League yesterday. 

    It was hello and goodbye to Europe's top club tournament for Gary Neville - who lost his first ever game as a manager. 

    His Valencia side were knocked out, going down 2-0 at home to French club Lyon.

    In the end, Olivier Giroud did it. Not quite single-handedly, but the Frenchman's hat-trick saw Arsenal reach the knockout stage of the Champions League with a3-0 victoryover Olympiakos last night.

    They only needed to win 2-0, the show-offs.
