Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini:"It's better to finish first because you can avoid important teams for just one stage more. But if you hope to win the title, you have to play against the big teams.

"I think that if we play the way we did in the second half [in the 4-2 win over Borussia Monchengladbach], we can play against any team."

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho: "A team struggling so much like we are is not obviously a candidate to win the Champions League.

"But when we won at Porto in 2004, we were not candidates. When we won at Inter in 2010, we were not candidates. When we were candidates, we lost two semi-finals with Real Madrid, we lost two semi-finals with Chelsea, so let's see."

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger: "I've not even looked at who we can get. We were so much out of it that I put all my focus on staying in.

"The result against Olympiakos makes us stronger and strengthens our belief. When you do that it creates a positive memory for rest of the season. Maybe it is a lucky year for us in the Champions League?"

What's going wrong with Man Utd?

Saumil Mehta: The squad is good but LvG is turning players into robots. There is no flair in the team now and he is running out of ideas.

Enweliku Henry: Man United problem lies on their sluggish counter attacking play. United are known for quick counter attack and that is missing.

Sean Opie: The squad is actually thin on quality. There aren't two good players per position, also no evidence of a game plan.

    However, not everyone's worrying...

Tom Hickman: Sorry but I'm not hugely concerned - we're FOURTH with our entire defence injured. If we take 'boring' wins, so what?

Rome to host Ryder Cuppublished at 10:25

Italy beat off competition from three other nations - Austria, Germany and Spain - to host the tournament.

It will be the third time the Ryder Cup has been staged on the continent, after Valderrama in Spain (1997) and - though this one is yet to happen - Paris' Le Golf National in France, due to be held there in 2018.

"History has shown time and again that The Ryder Cup is pure theatre and there is no question that the Eternal City of Rome will provide a wonderful backdrop for one of the great occasions in world golf," said chief executive of The European Tour Keith Pelley in a rather dramatic statement.

The awarding of the Ryder Cup will continue Italy’s legacy in the contest, which began when Costantino Rocca became the first Italian golfer to play in the match at The Belfry in England in 1993.

How do you celebrate equaling David James' Premier League record of 169 clean sheets?

In Petr Cech's case it is with a gingerbread version of himself, baked by his wife's fair hand.

She has gone into a fair bit of detail with it, with an iced helmet, Arsenal badge and kit.

Great work Mrs Cech, if you could send a box to Steve and I at Sportsday that would be much appreciated, ta.

Where are things going wrong for Man Utd?

Stannie: Man Utd are playing slow possession based football and you can't play that way. He needs to change his tactics.

Shahir: Everything about this squad is wrong, the subs, the mentality, the game plan. No direction

Akoko: It's mainly LVG's fault, no squad depth at Man Utd, the team is playing rigid and outdated type of football.
