    Guus Hiddink returned for his second stint as interim Chelsea manager after taking over from Jose Mourinho last December and he says the top flight has got tougher since his first spell at the club in 2009. 

    "Generally, I think the intensity in the league is higher and nowadays you see there are many clubs who can compete on a high level, due to the fact they also have more possibilities to sign players," Hiddink told the club's website.

    "Nowadays, you see teams halfway or over halfway up the league, which in the past you would normally not expect to be there, like Crystal Palace, Watford and Leicester.

    "These were teams normally nearer the bottom or the second tier, but they are doing very well. Because they have made good signings, everyone now is capable of beating everyone else and you can see that in the results."

    Liverpool Ladies have signed Netherlands captain Mandy van den Berg from Norwegian side Lillestrom SK.

    The 25-year-old defender captained the Dutch team at the 2015 Women's World Cup in Canada, where they reached the last 16 stage of the competition.

    "Once I heard of Liverpool Ladies' interest there was only one place I wanted to move to," she said.

    "It is a massive club with real ambitions for the 2016 season and I cannot wait to get started."

    Bristol and former England wing Tom Varndell is keen to play for Great Britain when rugby sevens makes its Olympics debut in Rio.

    Head coach Simon Amor has said he is looking for 15-a-side players to reinforce his squad, but time is against them integrating in time.

    "I would love a shot at the Olympics, Varndell told BBC Radio Bristol. "The Olympics is a once in a lifetime opportunity and Rio is not a bad place to go to either."

    Talking about Swansea, the club do not intend to sell top scorer Andre Ayew and will sign another striker this month, according to coach Alan Curtis.

    Only bottom side Aston Villa have scored fewer goals than Swansea this season and Curtis has assured fans that new players are imminent.

    "We don't want to lose anyone and are trying to bring people in," he said.

    Sunderland are understood to have had a bid of £14m rejected for Ayew, who joined the Swans for free in June 2015.

    Former Chelsea midfielder Gabriele Ambrosetti has joined Swansea's coaching team. 

    The 42-year-old played under newly-appointed Swans head coach Francesco Guidolin during Vicenza's 1997 Italian Cup success. Ambrosetti will work under Guidolin and Alan Curtis.

    "Francesco was my coach so I know how he works and his style, and he also knows how I work," said Ambrosetti.

    "We kept in touch all the time, and as soon as he asked me about going to Swansea with him I quickly said yes."

    Women's Super League champions Chelsea Ladies have signed forward Bethany England from Doncaster Belles.

    The England Under-23 international scored 14 goals last season as Doncaster finished second in WSL 2 and were promoted back to the top flight.

    England, 21, said: "I feel I am at the stage in my career to test myself at a higher level.

    "There is no doubt that will happen at Chelsea, not just during games but in every training session."

    "Future players will see the headlines and see it's not an option at all," doubles representative Fleming told BBC Scotland on Wednesday.
