Roberto Martinez is caught between the tricky stools of talking your team up while pleading for patience. "Everton should be playing under the expectations of winning titles" against "we cannot be underachieving when this team is new".

He spoke numerous times about being "very close to being a very consistent team" and the "fine margins". Ultimately, results will need to improve if the majority of fans are going to buy into his mantra. Martinez clearly believes he is on the verge of something special with this team and says it's unfair to judge him and the team before the end of the season.

The Scot played in France with Metz, and is fluent in the language, and has vast experience at a number two at clubs throughout England.

"Eric has helped me already," Garde said. "He played in France and in my network I was told he would be very helpful for me.

"I think it's important to have someone who knows the culture of English football better than me. It was important for me to give the players, especially the British players, the opportunity to work with someone of this profile."

"I won't complain to take the pressure or responsibility away from me. I'm not the guy who decides how much money we spend, I can only recommend."

Sections of the Everton support have grown restless at their side's results of late but Roberto Martinez was keen to accentuate the positives.

Manager Roberto Martinez says he will be speaking to referees chief Mike Riley after Everton's League Cup semi-final exit at the hands of Manchester City.

The match officials failed to spot that City's Raheem Sterling had run the ball out of play before crossing for Kevin de Bruyne to score City's second in their 3-1 win and Martinez said that "we're still hurting" after a 4-3 aggregate defeat denied them a Wembley final meeting with Liverpool.

Roberto Martinez might be wondering if he's run over any black cats or smashed a mirror in recent weeks. Everton have been on the wrong end of some harsh refereeing decisions of late, most notably on Wednesday at the Etihad Stadium.

But that cannot mask that Everton have been particularly lax in defence, which has played no small part in a run of just two wins in their last eight games, while in the league slipping to within eight points of the bottom three.

How the team react to their League Cup disappointment could dictate the remainder of their season. They still have plenty for and a very winnable FA Cup tie on Sunday at Carlisle United. But the sooner they can sort out a leaky defence (and goalkeeper), the better.
