Man Utd sack Louis van Gaal

We are still uncertain on some details concerning Louis van Gaal's exit from Manchester United.

Severance pay is still being negotiated, and the Dutchman was on a salary of £6.4m per year, with one year left of his contract. Yes, you read that right. £6.4m per year.

It is also still not certain whether Ryan Giggs will still be at Old Trafford, following the departure of manager Louis van Gaal.

Giggs, who was United's assistant manager, has been at the club for 29 years, winning the Premier League title 13 times, more than any other player.

Luke Darmanin: Always knew this would happen after Sir Alex - Utd sacking managers Real Madrid-style. i.e hours after winning a trophy.

Stephen Kwesi Assan: I still feel Giggs should be given the opportunity to manage Man Utd. Mourinho will be a disaster.

'Mourinho will bring winning days back to United'published at 12:17 British Summer Time 23 May 2016

    Football

Former England international and ex-Chelsea assistant manager Ray Wilkins has given his thoughts on the sacking of Louis van Gaal, with Jose Mourinho set to replace him.

"I hate seeing managers getting relieved of their posts, it is the most horrible thing in the world," Wilkins told Sky Sports.

"If they were to go for Jose it would be a good choice and he is the right person to take them forward.

"Manchester United want to win and he will bring winning days back to United. He is very intense and hopefully he will bring though some young players. But when he brings in players he will bring in players of the highest quality."

Former Chelsea and Scotland international Pat Nevin has been talking to the BBC's World Service about Manchester United's decision to sack Louis van Gaal.

Nevin said: "He will be upset but when time passes and he has time to look back on his career he walks out of Manchester United after winning a major trophy. Maybe it wasn't the worst time to go after all."

A good angle from Manchester Evening News' reporter Samuel Luckhurst. Has Jose Mourinho been making the decisions concerning Manchester United's future transfer policy for a while?

Earlier this month, Bayern Munich paid Benfica 35m euros (£27.5m) for 18-year-old midfielder Renato Sanches, who was also wanted by Manchester United, in a deal which could rise to 45m euros.

In a 25-year coaching career, Van Gaal has won league titles in three different countries, with Ajax and AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands , Barcelona in Spain and Bayern Munich in Germany.

He has also won domestic cups in three countries with Saturday’s FA Cup adding to the Dutch Cup, the German Cup and the Copa del Rey.

Van Gaal has achieved success in Europe, with the Uefa Cup in 1992 and then the Champions League with a youthful Ajax team in 1995.

Van Gaal to leave Man Utd?

If he is leaving Manchester United, then there is not a better way to do it than to put the FA Cup on the table in a defiant message to his critics.

That is exactly what Louis van Gaal did on Saturday in what may well be his last news conference as Manchester United manager.

"No-one could have done what I have done," said Van Gaal.
