"I'm told the recruitment team have been involved in an exhaustive process in finding the manager for some weeks and they realise the appointment needs to be made as soon as possible.

"The preferred candidate of the current chairman Steve Hollis is Nigel Pearson and legally Hollis must make the announcement as Tony Xia is not technically in charge of the club yet, as Football League approval is still needed.

"But the ultimate decision will be Tony Xia's. He has been fully briefed on progress and has his own views on the leading candidates."

"Aston Villa hope to appoint their new manager by the end of the week. Three candidates remain in the frame - Nigel Pearson,David Moyes and Roberto di Matteo - but there is no favourite as yet to land the job.

"Moyes is now highly touted to land the job, after being interviewed last Thursday night by Keith Wyness, who is leading the recruitment team.

"Wyness, the former Everton chief executive, who's expected to land the role at Villa, enjoyed a productive working relationship for five years with Moyes at Goddison Park and they have kept in touch since Wyness left in 2009 - but that is not thought to constitute a deal-maker."

Mourinho 'fantastic' for Man Utd - Blackmorepublished at 10:03 British Summer Time 23 May 2016

Mourinho to replace Van Gaal at Man Utd?

Ex-Manchester United defender Clayton Blackmore is asked about Jose Mourinho potentially coming to the club.

"He is a top manager," Blackmore tells BBC Two's Victoria Derbyshire programme. "Hopefully he has recovered from his stint at Chelsea but if he does come to the club he will be fantastic.

"Whoever is in charge at the start of next season will do well to look at Leicester. They were one of the worst teams to play at Old Trafford but they have a team spirit.

"They played route-one football and Kasper Schmeichel played more long balls to Jamie Vardy than anyone else."

'United fans were not going to renew their season tickets'published at 09:55 British Summer Time 23 May 2016

Mourinho to replace Van Gaal at Man Utd?

Some quotes from former Manchester United defender Clayton Blackmore about the news Jose Mourinho is set to replace Louis van Gaal.

"Van Gaal has had a couple of years and to be fair to him he has brought some silverware home in two years, but it is down to the fans," said Blackmore on BBC Two's Victoria Derbyshire programme.

"A lot of them were not going to renew their season tickets if Van Gaal stayed. We've not done a lot of crossing, shooting and scoring goals this season.

"They have great players in the team but we don't make enough chances and score enough goals."

You can watch the interview here on BBC iPlayer (from 09:42).

"He is the same employment barrister who acted for David Moyes when he was sacked by United in 2014.

"He returned at 09:44 and was allowed straight in."

Tom Wright: Jose is about as far from United's core values as Van Gaal. Doesn't play attacking football, doesn't promote youth. Patch job.

Mark Bates: Mourinho creates negativity, doesn't play attractive football but wins things until it all goes wrong. Depends what you want.

Seth Gogo: LVG's time at MUFC is a complete failure. Spending huge sums of money and finishing outside of top four with boring football.

Your thoughts on the uncertainty at Manchester United.

alison richardson: Man Utd have behaved disgracefully over sacking of LVG. They should be ashamed they have allowed speculation to go on so long.

Alex Saunders: I hope United fans don't start buying into Mourinho's excuses. Will be short term and won't use youth.

Chris Baker: As a life long United fan, I didn't want Jose at the club, we need stability now, not a 2-3 year fix, Blanc or Giggs ideal.
