    Wales were in the same qualifying group as Belgium, earning a goalless draw in Brussels and winning 1-0 in Cardiff. That, Chris Coleman insists, will have no bearing.

    "Whatever we know about Belgium, the games we've had in the past, they count for nothing," he said. "There are no second chances, it won't matter if we won last time or drew, it's all on the night and that's exciting."

    While these are glorious, heady days for Welsh football, Chris Coleman appreciates that there were bleaker moments in the not too distant past.

    The reasons for that change in fortune are varied, but one is the composition of the squad. "You need leaders, more than one," Coleman said. "We've got a great dressing room, a good blend. 

    "We had some tough times, some dark days and some huge disappointments and that's how I judge people. Not on a sun, shiny day but in the dark days."

    "We'll enjoy it when we perform and that is what the team has done this tournament," the manager said. "This is a huge test and a big challenge. It's a great position for us to be in but we have to go and do all the things that have got us there in the first place."

    The headline news from the Welsh camp is that captain Ashley Williams is fit to play despite suffering a nasty shoulder injury in the last-16 win over Northern Ireland.

    Williams said: "It was hurting a lot at the end of the game but credit to medical staff because it's in good shape and I'm sure it'll be fine."

    Coach Chris Coleman is confident his captain will be 100% for the team's quarter-final. "There's always worry about shoulder injuries but he's done all the sessions this week so that's positive," he added.

    Erik Bielderman, the chief football writer for French newspaper L'Equipe, has followed Claude Puel's career. He says Puel is a "quiet guy" with the media and will "not give great headlines", but "speaks his mind" in the dressing room. 

    Bielderman said: "He loves entertaining football but he is also realistic. His team will never be unbalanced but they will play to win games. 

    "This guy is suitable. Southampton is the perfect connection with Claude because he is an academy coach. He loves the academy player." 

    Anyone think there's more than a hint of Alan Pardew about Puel?
