    Champions League draw

It was all going so well for Claudio Ranieri.

Leicester - making their debut in the competition - had secured top place in Group G with one game left to play. They'd only conceded one goal in five matches, winning four, drawing one.

Then they travelled to Porto - the hardest game in their group. They lost 5-0, and the scoreline didn't flatter their hosts. Fans will hope it wasn't a portent for what is to come.

Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich, Benfica, Paris St-Germain, Real Madrid or Sevilla will be their reward for topping their group. Who said it was a bonus?

    Champions League draw

Much like Pep Guardiola's start to life in the Premier League, his first Champions League group campaign with Manchester City was a bit up and down.

The positives? An effortless 4-0 victory against Borussia Monchengladbach and a scintillating 3-1 home win against Pep's first flame Barcelona.

Negatives? Home and away draws against Celtic and a 4-0 shellacking at the Nou Camp.

Second place in Group C means City will face one of Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus, Monaco and Napoli.

With a European giant in Paris St-Germain in the group, alongside relative minnows Basel and Ludogorets Razgrad, Arsenal did exactly what was expected of them.

They remained unbeaten, picking up 12 points with minimal fuss against Basel and Ludogorets, and a pair of draws with French champions PSG.

Top place in the group came courtesy of a heroic draw in Paris by Bulgarian side Ludogorets, leaving the Gunners to face one of Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich, Benfica, Real Madrid, Porto or Sevilla in the first knockout round.

More on Crewe Alexandra confirming that director of football Dario Gradi has been suspended "following discussions with the Football Association".

Gradi, 75, has been suspended pending an FA investigation that will include looking into claims he "smoothed over" a complaint of sexual assault against a Chelsea scout in the 1970s.

A former youth player at Chelsea - where Gradi was assistant manager - says he was assaulted by Eddie Heath, the club's chief scout, when he was 15.

Gradi, 75, denies any wrongdoing and says he will help the FA's review.

Nick Wood: Want #LCFC, external to go further. So not Real or Bayern. PSG on current form over Sevilla but Benfica / Bayer may also give us a shot

Tim Welsh: As a Gooner....for my own sanity anyone but Madrid & Bayern.....please.....it's Christmas!

Dimos: Last few years Arsenal drew not only superpowers but also those in the best form. So, Real it is then, roll on the challenge.

In case you weren't up early enough to catch it - and it would've meant a very early Monday morning start - England subsided to an innings-and-36-run defeat on the final day of the fourth Test in Mumbai as India swiftly sealed a series victory.

Resuming on 182-6 - still 49 behind - England's final four wickets fell in 48 balls, with Ravichandran Ashwin taking 6-55 for match figures of 12-167.

It is only the third time a Test side have made 400 or more in their first innings and then lost by an innings.

India, 3-0 up with one match to play, have now won five consecutive series.

'Football and politics should not be together'published at 10:04 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2016

Everton v Arsenal (Tuesday, 19:45 GMT)

One last snippet from Arsene Wenger. He is asked about the letter signed by five former FA bosses, asking for legislation to reform the organisation.

The Arsenal boss is far from keen on government intervention.

"My response is that football and politics should not be together," he says.

"Football is a very special activity and it should be ruled by football people. When you look at history when sport and politics mix, it's not for the benefit of sport.

"I don't know what their frustration is. Football is a sport with values. The values of our sport are respected."

'Ox and Walcott in demanding position'published at 09:53 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2016

Everton v Arsenal (Tuesday, 19:45 GMT)

Wenger has been talking about the roles of Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain at the club, and says the pair play in the most "demanding" positions.

"They play in positions where physical demands are higher," he added. "Today you need to come up and down and be a danger going forward. You need to find the level, a good balance.

"Oxlade-Chamberlain is much more efficient going forward now, he can provide, he did on Saturday for Ozil, and he can score goals.

"We have a squad of 25 people and the physical demands are the most important in that position, more than being a central defender. The changes are more frequent because of that position."

What does Wenger think of Everton?published at 09:48 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2016

Everton v Arsenal (Tuesday, 19:45 GMT)

Wenger is asked about Tuesday's opponents, Everton, and how they have come close on many occasions in the past 10 years to breaking into the Premier League's top four:

"They were close many times and once they were in the top four (2004-05)," he says.

"First of all, why, you have top quality teams in clubs, always Man United, Chelsea and Arsenal and it's difficult to get in."

Wenger says he managed against Everton boss Ronald Koeman when the Dutchman was at Ajax "and they were very tight games".

On why Everton have been on a poor run of just one win in 10, he says: "I don't know why, the difficulty of the Premier League maybe".

Wenger is asked how many points it will take to win the Premier League:

"I don't know," he said. "We go tomorrow to Everton and let's focus on Everton. Win your next game is all you can do in football. Every game is like a cup final for everybody.

"For the sixth time this season we have come back from being down so let's continue with that and our resilience."

Arsenal are three points off leaders Chelsea in the Premier League, but manager Arsene Wenger says there are no favourites at the minute.

"I believe they (Chelsea) will be one of the candidates," he said.

"But there is no super favourite at the moment. When you look at the league it is down to consistency. It is very open, very interesting."

Wenger is asked if his side's unbeaten league run since the opening day of the season is because they are now stronger psychologically.

"It's down to the players, it's as simple as that. It's nothing to do with psychology, it's to do with how the players play on the football pitch," he says.

"The strong mentality of the players is first down to you have more maturity in the squad. The players have played for many years. In the recent history we haven't lost and that creates belief in the squad."

Midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has been linked with a move away from the club, but Arsene Wenger says he wants him to stay.

"We want him to stay at the club," he added. "I bought him at a very young age and think he is developing well.

"This season he is making steps and moving forward. We have invested so much time and work in the player. He is integrating the qualities we want him to have and we want him to stay."

'Challenge without injured Mustafi'published at 09:26 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2016

Everton v Arsenal (Tuesday, 19:45 GMT)

Arsene Wenger says his side will miss defender Shkodran Mustafi, who is out for three weeks after a suffering hamstring injury against Stoke.

"It is a challenge because we have had good defensive stability - I am confident the players that come in can do well," he said.

"That’s one of the tests. We have had many tests since start of season – players like Cazaorla – we have been able to deal with it."
