Belfodil set to join Evertonpublished at 08:41 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January 2017

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Everton have agreed a £10.4m fee with Standard Liege for Algeria forward Ishak Belfodil and the player is expected to leave the Belgian club's warm weather camp in Spain and travel to Merseyside today for a medical.

Director of football Steve Walsh identified Belfodil, 24, as a potential addition and Everton are now hopeful of taking their spending this month to around the £45m mark.

Belfodil is not part of Algeria's Africa Cup of Nations squad.

Everton's transfer activities have moved up a gear since Koeman demanded action after the FA Cup third-round exit to Leicester.

Manchester United's Morgan Schneiderlin was having a medical on Wednesday. They have already signed Charlton Athletic forward Ademola Lookman, 19, for £11m this month.

Tom Cleverley is due to have a medical with Watford today after a loan move was agreed with Everton for the remainder of the season.

The 27-year-old has been at Everton since 2015 but has featured only twice since 5 November and the impending arrival of Morgan Schniederlin from Manchester United will further restrict the midfielder’s chances.

Cleverley won 13 England caps during his four seasons as a first-team player at Manchester United, where he won the Premier League in 2013.

He also played in the 2015 FA Cup final for Aston Villa.

Cleverley spent the 2009-10 season on loan at Watford in the Championship and won the club’s player of the year award.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was equally unimpressed with his team's performance against Southampton.

He said his side could have lost 3-0 after being outplayed for much of the tie.

"The best thing for us is the result. We know that we can play better at Anfield, nothing is decided," Klopp said.

"We cannot be happy with the performance, Southampton cannot be happy with the result. I can't remember a clear chance for us.

"We gave the ball away so easily and we needed Loris Karius to save our lives two or three times."
