League One strugglers Oldham Athletic have sacked manager Stephen Robinson and reappointed John Sheridan, six months after he left the club to drop down a division.

Sheridan left Oldham in the summer for Notts County - with Robinson his replacement - but he was sacked by the League Two club on 2 January.

The 52-year-old former Latics midfielder has taken over almost a year to the day since doing so in similar circumstances last season, when the club were relegation zone, but Sheridan guided them to 17th place and safety.

This is his third spell in charge of Oldham.

Burnley manager Sean Dyche says he is "absolutely devastated" by the death of Graham Taylor.

In 2011, Taylor was chairman at Watford when Dyche was given his first job in management at the club.

"From my point of view, he's a man who had a massive part in me taking over at Watford," Dyche said.

"For such a legend at Watford to be helping you have that chance, and helping me along the way as a young manager, I'm absolutely devastated with the news.

"I didn't speak to him so long ago, I'd ring him semi-regularly and catch up with him about nothing in particular.

"To hear that today, I'm sure the whole of football will be really devastated with that news, especially at a pretty young age as well."

"I had some time with him and always found him a very polite and respectful man, a real football man. It's a very sad day."

Villa pay respect to Taylorpublished at 15:59 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January 2017

Aston Villa statement: "Aston Villa Football Club are deeply saddened by news today of the death of our former manager Graham Taylor.

"Graham joined us from Watford in the summer of 1987 and set about transforming our fortunes following relegation to the old Second Division.

"With the addition of Paul McGrath and Kent Nielsen, we finished as [First Division] runners-up to Liverpool and reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

"Unfortunately there was a price to pay – Taylor’s achievements brought him to the attention of the Football Association, who were looking for a replacement for Bobby Robson after the 1990 World Cup finals.

"When John Gregory left in January 2002, Taylor became the first Villa manager to be appointed for a second time, although that spell only lasted for one season.

"Graham will always have a place of honour in our history books for his achievements while at the helm. He will also be fondly remembered by staff at Bodymoor Heath and Villa Park who had the pleasure of working with him."

Lawrie McMenemy - Graham Taylor's assistant with England - has been paying tribute to his former boss on BBC Radio 5 live.

"I’m shocked, I’m trying to get over the shock, I didn’t know he had any problem," he said.

"I haven’t spoken to Graham for a while, but we were like that, we always knew where each other were - it’s like that in football, it’s like a family and we were there for each other if it was needed.

"He was a good, solid fella. From a managerial point of view he did what many managers don’t do these days, he cut his teeth at the lower level and was successful. He got the best out of people. He was a good football man and a good family man."
