    British Olympic bronze medallist Nile Wilson has had "successful" surgery on his ankle after snapping ligaments in a "freak" training accident.  

    The 20-year-old, who won bronze on the high bar at Rio 2016, was injured during what he called a "basic" parallel bars routine last week.

    Marcelo could be out for up to four weeks and Real Madrid team-mate Luka Modric also faces a spell on the sidelines after the pair were injured during the 2-1 win over Malaga.

    Left-back Marcelo limped off after 25 minutes with a hamstring injury, while midfielder Modric has a thigh strain.

    Real are already without the injured Pepe, Dani Carvajal and Gareth Bale.

    They visit Celta Vigo on Wednesday in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals trailing 2-1 from the first leg.

    Marcelo could miss their Champions League last-16 tie at home to Napoli on 15 February.

    Some positive news...

    Hull City midfielder Ryan Mason, who has had surgery after fracturing his skull during Sunday's game at Chelsea, has been speaking of the incident in hospital. 

    Hull released a statement saying: "Ryan will continue to be monitored at the hospital over the coming days where the club will remain in close contact with Ryan, his family and the staff at St Mary's.

    "Ryan and his family have also been extremely touched by the overwhelming support they have received and would very much like to thank all of those who have posted such positive comments both on social media and in the press over the last 24 hours."

    Hull said Mason had been visited this morning at St Mary's Hospital by club captain Michael Dawson, club doctor Mark Waller, head of medical Rob Price and club secretary Matt Wild.

    Hull City are in talks to sign Liverpool's Serbia forward Lazar Markovic, who has been on loan at Sporting Lisbon since the summer.

    The 22-year-old could move to the KC Stadium until the end of the season, but his season-long deal in Portugal would need to be ended first.

    Liverpool, Markovic and Sporting are in talks to terminate that agreement.

    Markovic joined the Reds from Benfica for £20m in 2014 and played 34 times before a loan move to Fenerbahce.

    Rafael Nadal has reached the Australian Open quarter-final with a hard fought four-set victory over Gael Monfils. 

    It ended 3-6 3-6 6-4 4-6 to the Spaniard who will face Milos Raonic in the next round.

    Southend United have sacked their head groundsman after Saturday's League One match against Bolton Wanderers was postponed because of a frozen pitch.

    Ken Hare was dismissed after the game at Roots Hall was called off,following freezing temperatures overnight.

    "People generally lose their position as a result of not doing their job," said a club statement., external

    "The necessary decision surrounding Mr Hare was a disappointment and of course not taken lightly."

    It is understood Gary Cahill, John Terry and Chelsea assistant boss Steve Holland visited St Mary's hospital last night to check on Ryan Mason's well-being after the Hull City midfielder fractured his skull during Sunday's game at Stamford Bridge. 

    They spent time with Mason's family.

    Football fans in England should all celebrate Wayne Rooney's goalscoring achievements, former Manchester United assistant Mike Phelan says.

    Rooney, 31, is United's all-time leading scorer after netting his 250th for the club against in a 1-1 draw at Stoke on Saturday, breaking Sir Bobby Charlton's 44-year-old record.

    Asked what makes Rooney so special, Phelan told BBC Radio 5 live: "It’s down to his desire to play football and to want to be the best. He started with a hat-trick in his first game and he’s now gone on to break the record. He’s a terrific player."

    Phelan added: "We should all celebrate that we have a player in this country who has contributed to the game magnificently."

    Sunderland defender Papy Djilobodji has been charged with violent conduct by the Football Association after appearing to strike West Brom captain Darren Fletcher in his side's 2-0 defeat at The Hawthorns on Saturday.

    The 86th-minute incident was not seen by referee Craig Pawson.

    Djilobodji has until 18:00 GMT on Tuesday to respond to the charge.

    The Senegalese was sent off against Hull in November so could face a four-game ban if found guilty.

    The Football Association is waiting for referee Jon Moss’ report before deciding what action to take against Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.

    Wenger was sent off in injury-time of Arsenal’s 2-1 win over Burnley on Sunday after protesting at Moss awarding the visitors a penalty.

    He then appeared to push fourth official Anthony Taylor after being told he could not watch the remainder of the game from the tunnel.

    Wenger served touchline bans in 2009 and 2010 after incidents against Manchester United and Tottenham respectively.

    England women's 10-match unbeaten run was ended by a 1-0 loss to Norway in La Manga.

    Norway went ahead midway through the first half when Andrine Hegerberg sent a free-kick into the box for sister Ada to head past Siobhan Chamberlain from close range.

    England's best chances against Norway fell to Fara Williams and Lucy Bronze, who saw efforts from the edge of the box go over the crossbar.  

    They are next in action on Tuesday when they face Sweden, the Olympic silver medallists from Rio, in Murcia.

    World number three Milos Raonic reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open with victory over Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut.

    Canadian Raonic, the highest seed left in the men's singles, had been struggling with flu but came through 7-6 (8-6) 3-6 6-4 6-1.

    He will face the winner of the match currently in progress between Rafael Nadal and Gael Monfils. Rafa is two sets up but can he close it out?
