Greg Howell: Perfect weekend for Chelsea who just can't lose... Liverpool are their own worst enemy as usual. Both Manchester clubs will be lucky to make the top four!

Michael Rice: Awful weekend for my team Crystal Palace. The heart and soul of the club has been ripped out, the worst errors were selling Gayle, Murray and Jedinak without bringing in adequate replacements who had a stomach for the fight. Not just Pardew's fault, the owners need to take some responsibility too.

Wez McCullough: Absolutely Sunderland heading to the Championship. The culmination of bad decisions made by Ellis Short since he took over are finally coming home to roost. It's no less than we deserve to be honest.

Before you snigger at the headline, read on...

"Wayne Rooney may not be able to solve simultaneous equations, or discuss the theoretical basis of relativity, but is he not a practical problem-solver?"

One of Sportsday's favourite sport columnists, Matthew Syed (who is also a former British Olympic table tennis player don't you know), has written a fascinating piece about Wayne Rooney for The Times:

"Sneering at Rooney’s intellect has to stop – he is a genius in his chosen field".

We're used to hearing about athletes achieving through sheer dedication to their sport - an unrelenting focus, solely on their event, which takes them to the top.

Well, Jazmin Sawyers isn't quite like that.

You may have watched the 22-year-old representing Team GB in the Olympic long jump final in Rio or claiming a silver medal in the event from the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, but did you know she's also a talented musician?

After posting some cover videos on her own YouTube channel, Jazmin was asked to audition for the new series of The Voice, and was picked by judge Will.I.Am on Saturday's show.

  11. F1 has 'no on-track competition'published at 10:00 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2017

    Chase CareyImage source, Getty Images

Formula 1 is about to be under new ownership by US group Liberty Media - and it could lead to profound changes in the sport.

The new chairman Chase Carey (great 'tache) has spent some time getting to know his new venture and the problems the sport currently faces...

    His findings were:

    • The revenue system is skewed in favour of the already rich and powerful, to the extent that the smallest teams are struggling to survive and money is tight for about half the grid
    • There is a lack of competition on track
    • Television audience figures are dropping in many markets - although this is largely because of a switch to pay television, to make more money from TV rights deals
    • The longest-standing races are struggling to fund themselves and risk dropping off the calendar
    • The decision-making process is not working properly
    • Some significant business and sporting decisions have been made for solely financial reasons, disregarding other important factors, such as their effects on the sporting side
    • An acceptance that F1 has lost some of its appeal, particularly a sense of edge and drama and as an extreme driver challenge.

Liberty has decided to change much of that. The question is how.

    Andrew Benson investigates.

While the news has rightly been dominated by Hull midfielder Ryan Mason's horrific injury, there were plenty of talking points from the weekend's football.

Diego Costa is apparently back in the good books at Chelsea after scoring in their victory over Hull, while Arsenal boss Arsenal Wenger could be in a bit of bother with the FA after pushing fourth official Anthony Taylor during the Gunners' 2-1 win over Burnley.

There was also the small matter of Wayne Rooney becoming Manchester United's record goalscorer and Liverpool losing a thriller at home to Swansea, as well as further defeats for the very-much-in-trouble Sunderland and Crystal Palace.

What did you make of it all? Chelsea nailed-on to win the title? Sunderland heading to the Championship? Will Manchester City keeper Claudio Bravo ever make a save again?

Mason injury 'freakish'published at 09:34 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2017

    BBC Radio 5 live

Former Hull City boss Mike Phelan has described Ryan Mason's serious injury against Chelsea as "freakish".

Mason, 25, has had surgery after fracturing his skull during an accidental clash of heads with Chelsea defender Gary Cahill 13 minutes into the Premier League match.

“It was a horrible collision which happens sometimes in football," Phelan, who signed Mason from Tottenham for a club-record undisclosed fee in August 2016. told BBC Radio 5 live.

"It was a little bit freakish. He is a strong character, he’s pretty quiet and unassuming. Watching it, the response was terrific. They were on the scene very quickly and got him to the hospital very quickly. I don’t think you can stop collisions of that nature. It’s a challenge in the air and a clash of heads.

Leicester's defeat at Southampton was a great example of how tactics, rather than players, are hugely important in deciding football matches.

You still need a talented, intelligent team with the ability to carry those tactics out for you, of course, but your system can win or lose a game for you - just the same as an amazing bit of skill will.

That is what happened as St Mary's when Leicester lined up in a diamond shape in midfield. They played it really poorly, because it looked to me as if they had not worked on it very much.
