'Test captaincy best job in English sport'published at 14:03 Greenwich Mean Time 6 February 2017

    Cook resigns as Test captain

    Michael Vaughan
Ex-England captain on BBC Radio 5 live

Alastair Cook's mind looked drained so it was time to move on and let a new guy to come in to lead the team.

I still think there's four or five years left of him opening the batting. This could be a step to go on and continue to be a tremendous batsman and score consistent runs.

England need the powerhouse of Alastair Cook at the top of the order in Australia, with all his experience and the form he showed in 2011.

The England captaincy is hard but it's the best job in English sport. It does drain you but it takes four or five years to do that. I'd tell Joe Root 'do it your way and try to enjoy it'. Joe Root will do it well, like his does his batting.

Cameroon came from behind to beat Egypt 2-1 and seal a fifth Africa Cup of Nations in a thrilling, edgy final.

Substitute Vincent Aboubakar swept in the winner two minutes from time, flicking the ball over defender Ali Gabr and thumping it home.

Nicolas Nkoulou had earlier equalised for Cameroon, rising highest to power in a header on the hour mark.

The equaliser cancelled out Mohamed Elneny's opener on 22 minutes with a beautifully taken near-post strike.

The wild celebrations for Aboubakar's winner announced Cameroon's return to the continental summit, after a 15-year wait.

More on Joost van der Westhuizen who has died, aged 45published at 12:54 Greenwich Mean Time 6 February 2017

    Rugby Union

Van der Westhuizen, who helped the Springboks win the World Cup in 1995, was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2011.

Regarded as one of the finest scrum-halves in history, he won 89 caps for the Springboks between 1993 and 2003, scoring 38 tries.

He captained the Springboks for four years, including at the 1999 World Cup, before his retirement in 2003.

"Joost will be remembered as one of the greatest Springboks - not only of his generation, but of all time," said South Africa rugby president Mark Alexander.

"He also became an inspiration and hero to many fellow sufferers of this terrible disease as well as to those unaffected.

"We all marvelled at his bravery, his fortitude and his uncomplaining acceptance of this terrible burden."

My thoughts on Scotland, Ireland, England, Wales... and the Lionspublished at 12:23 Greenwich Mean Time 6 February 2017

The Six Nations opening weekend has prompted as many questions as it has provided answers.

Is Scotland's win over Ireland the start of some sustained success?

Was England's scrappy, but nonetheless victorious, performance against France a sign of greatness or a symptom of something amiss?

And will Wales' failure to score a fourth try in beating Italy be the first significant part that bonus points have to play in Six Nations history?

Here is my attempt to pick through the intrigue of the first set of fixtures.
