Former England bowler Matthew Hoggard has been speaking to BBC Radio 5 live after Alastair Cook's resignation as Test captain.

“It’s a hard decision I’m sure for Alastair Cook.

“He will be remembered as the most successful captain, and not only as a great leader but also as a genuinely nice bloke. Everybody who has played with him and under him won’t have a bad word against him.

“We’ve seen Alastair Cook evolve as a captain. In the beginning there were questions marks over how he placed his field and how he went about his business but we’ve seen him evolve into a better captain. He will have regrets but everybody does.

“Whatever Alastair Cook decided would have been the right decision. He has the backing of everyone who played under him and going forward he would have had the backing of the team."

    Your reaction - #bbcsportsday

Hugo Walford: Root's too frenetic plus doesn't need the added responsibility after just becoming a dad - I think Stuart Broad.

Stephen: Cook has been a tower of strength for England. Root is a future captain but I worry he'd be overwhelmed.

Anon via 81111: Moeen Ali should replace Cook. Only one of a few that have been in the side long enough that's not just a bowler and you wouldn't want a negative affect on Root or Bairstow's form.

Kashif Akhtar: Sorry to see Cook go, let's not forget what he has achieved during what is the best probably England team/era.

Joe Green: A big decision but the right one. Sad for Cook to go but it's time for change. I'd say Root for Captain now.

MoonCook has led England with real class, kept scoring runs throughout that time, sad to see him step down.

Stepping down an 'incredibly hard decision' - Cookpublished at 09:37 Greenwich Mean Time 6 February 2017

    Cricket

    CookImage source, Getty Images

“It’s been a huge honour to be England captain and to lead the Test team over the past five years.

“Stepping down has been an incredibly hard decision but I know this is the correct decision for me and at the right time for the team.

“I’ve had time to reflect after the India series and this weekend I spoke to Colin Graves, the Chairman, to explain and offer my resignation.

“It’s a sad day personally in many ways but I want to thank everyone I’ve captained, all the coaches and support staff and, of course, the England supporters and the Barmy Army who follow us home and away and have given us unwavering support.

“Playing for England really is a privilege and I hope to carry on as a Test player, making a full contribution and helping the next England captain and the team however I can.”

Will this go down in history as one of the greatest Super Bowl catches?

A diving, juggling 23-yard circus catch by New England Patriots' Julian Edelman amid two defenders as they all tumbled to the ground.

It sparked the move that ended with the Patriots levelling the scores against the Falcons in the last minute of regulation time, and set them up to complete victory in overtime.
