The agreement does not include a break clause and, should it be completed, will extend his reign to 23 years.

Neither Arsenal nor Wenger, 67, see this as definitely being his final contract.

Arsenal are expected to spend at least £100m on new players in the upcoming transfer window - which opens on 1 July - having also spent around that figure last summer.

The Gunners finished fifth in the Premier League this season, the first time they have finished outside the top four since the Frenchman joined in 1996.

The British and Irish Lions should not worry about their "difficult schedule", head coach Warren Gatland says.

The 41-man squad arrived in Auckland on Wednesday, and were greeted at the airport by a traditional Maori welcoming ceremony.

Gatland's side begin their 10-match in New Zealand tour on Saturday against a Provincial Union XV in Whangerei.

"You can't dwell on it," Gatland said. "We know what a daunting challenge we face. Everyone is really up for it."

Wales hooker Ken Owens will miss the British and Irish Lions tour opener because of an ankle injury.

He missed Scarlets' Pro12 final win against Munster at the weekend and will not face New Zealand Barbarians in Whangerei on Saturday.

Owens said: "I've got a couple more boxes to tick, but hopefully [I'll be] fit for the second or third game."

However, captain Sam Warburton hopes not to miss early tour action as he did in Australia in 2013.

Olympique Lyonnais and Norway striker Ada Hegerberg has been crowned BBC Women's Footballer of the Year 2017.

Thousands of fans from across the world cast their votes as the 21-year-old beat second-placed Brazil forward Marta and third-placed Canada captain Christine Sinclair.

The other nominees on the five-player shortlist for the BBC World Service award were Sweden keeper Hedvig Lindahl and Germany's Melanie Behringer.

"Wow, it's a surprise," said Hegerberg.

"It's a huge honour to win, with such big-name footballers nominated," added the striker, whose club will seek to retain their Champions League title - to complete back-to-back trebles - when they face Paris St-Germain in Thursday's all-French final in Cardiff.

Twenty-eight Russian athletes have had their requests to compete as neutrals rejected by world athletics' governing body, which has approved three others.

The IAAF doping review board accepted the appeals of 400m runner Kseniya Aksyonova, javelin thrower Vera Rebrik and 400m hurdler Vera Rudakova.

A further 27 cases are under review as Russia's athletics federation remains banned from international competition.

Meanwhile, Yelena Isinbayeva has quit her key Russian anti-doping role.

Kvitova's Parisian comeback ends - from a set and 3-1 down the Czech turned things around to force a tie-break, but Bethanie Mattek-Sands won the last three points to clinch it.

A double fault on match point was a disappointing way to end for Kvitova, who chucked her racquet to the ground in frustration, but few expected her to even play in Paris following the knife attack at her home last December.

A win, followed by a serious workout over two hours in 33C, can be considered a successful week.

Petra Kvitova's return to action came to an end in the second round of the French Open as she lost 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-5) to Bethanie Mattek-Sands.

Kvitova, 27, only returned to full-time practice at the start of May after being stabbed in December.

The Czech - a two-time Wimbledon champion - suffered career-threatening injuries to her left hand.

She rallied from 3-1 down to take the second set to a tie-break but lost to the American on a double fault.
