Sir Alex Ferguson was among the first to pay tribute to Arsene Wenger's work.
"I am pleased he has announced he is leaving at this stage of the season as he can now have the send-off that he truly deserves," said the former Manchester United boss, who won 13 league titles in 26 years at Old Trafford, before retiring in 2013.
"He is, without doubt, one of the greatest Premier League managers and I am proud to have been a rival, a colleague and a friend to such a great man.
"It is great testament to his talent, professionalism and determination that has been able to dedicate 22 years of his life to a job that he loves."

Arsene Wenger came in at a time when players were ready to change.
Arsene was clever in that he didn't tell us to do things. He would bring in professionals to spread his message, otherwise it might have been like a child saying: 'Oh, Dad, I'm fed up listening to you.'
He delegated well. There were lots of different messages from different professionals. There was a sports scientist talking about stretching, conditioning and training; a dietician doing blood tests; a doctor talking about the importance of vitamin C, iron and B12.
There were slogans like 'chew to win' and 'sip to win'. We took the mick - but more significantly we took it on board.
Loser92: Arsenal ‘fans’ should hang their heads in shame after the way they hounded Arsene Wenger out of the club that he made great. We’ll see how the same fans react when the new manager comes in and the Gunners don’t compete for the league title.

West Ham United
Arsenal entertain West Ham on Sunday and Hammers boss David Moyes has had his say about the announcement Arsene Wenger is to leave the Gunners at the end of the season.
"It's never easy when you follow great managers at great clubs. It'll be tough for whoever takes the Arsenal job," the former Manchester United boss said.
"He's been a great competitor, a terrific manager. One of the best managers that the Premier League has seen.
"Real football people appreciate what he's done. He's dedicated to his job, he's been dedicated to his sport and he's a real proper football man."
Arsenal shareholder Alisher Usmanov has expressed his sadness at the news of Arsene Wenger's impending exit.
"Today is a day of great sadness for Arsenal, as it announces the departure of a legendary and devoted manager," the Russian said.
"My long-held admiration for Arsene Wenger is no secret. He revolutionised our historic club, and as a man he embodied everything that defines Arsenal as an institution - integrity, class and tradition.
"Undoubtedly one of the greatest European coaches of all time, Arsene Wenger's legacy will live on far into the future, and I wish him all the best.
"And I obviously wish to Arsene Wenger's successor to follow in his footsteps and to win on the football field."
Just to recap, Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis on the search for Arsenal's next manager: "I think we have to be open-minded and brave in the decision - when Arsene was appointed, I don't think he was on many people's radar.
"That doesn't mean we have to repeat that but it does mean we have to be bold in the appointment. We want someone who plays exciting and progressive football.
"But I think there is also a significant thing at Arsenal in how the manager represents the club. We don't want to lose his qualities and values."

My reaction was like everyone else. It felt like Arsenal were taking a huge gamble in an era when foreign managers were almost unheard of. Let's not forget he was the first foreign manager to win the Premier League.

Arsenal need to be "open-minded, brave and bold" in their search to replace Arsene Wenger as manager, says chief executive Ivan Gazidis.
More quotes from Ivan Gazidis' news conference: "Arsene's focus is on Sunday's game - that's who he is.
"He has transformed the beautiful game and made Arsenal famous throughout the world for the style of football we play.
"He is able to make people believe they can achieve great things, on and beyond the football pitch. The foundations of this club have never been stronger."
Right, that's it from Ivan Gazidis.
Arsenal's chief executive was reluctant to discuss the process about finding a successor for Arsene Wenger - instead spending most of the 30 minute news conference praising the Frenchman.
Arsenal
More from Arsenal's chief executive.
"It's very clear our players are going to fight for this man and send him off the right way.
"The commitment of these players to finish the season strongly is unquestioned."
Ivan Gazidis says Arsenal's next manager will be a bold appointment who will fit the club.
"The most important thing is to make the right appointment - not a quick appointment."
Gazidis: "I don't think Arsene could leave a club after 22 years without emotion being involved. It's not just a working relationship I have with Arsene, it's also a personal relationship.
"Arsene is going to feel the full force of this club behind him over the next few weeks."
