Arsene Wenger is to leave Arsenal at the end of the season, ending a near 22-year reign at the club.

The Frenchman departs a year before his latest contract was due to expire.

The Gunners are sixth in the league and set to miss out on a top-four spot for the second straight season, with their hopes of reaching the Champions League resting on winning the Europa League - the first leg of their semi-final against Atletico Madrid is next Thursday.

Wenger, 68, won three Premier League titles and seven FA Cups, including the Double in 1998 and 2002.

Wenger was a visionary and transformed our club and English football. He deserves a great send off from the fans and the players by winning the Europa League. Thanks Arsene

    Paul Chelmsford

So the 'Wenger Out' brigade have got their wish. As an Arsenal supporter since the 50s, I say be careful what you wish for. I don't expect any other manager to be provide the success that Arsene Wenger has. We owe him a huge debt of thanks.

    David Grigg

Arsene is a legend but this has been long overdue. I hope we win the Europa League and send him off and a high. He was one of my heroes for a very long time. He's done so much for our club I will be eternally grateful.

Jarvis Whiteley: Farwell Wenger, I was Wenger out, but for the right reasons, I wanted him to leave on his terms with his head held high! He warrants the respect to do so! Merci Wenger! You're one of the greatest and nobody can take that away from you.

Dan Crouch: Can't argue with his record, especially over the first 10 years. Some incredible players brought to the Premier League and the Invincibles season. Some great memories even as a Manchester United fan.

Callum Anderson: Wenger almost certainly the last of a kind. A manager given time to build by his club. He has made the right decision by leaving. Yet three Premier Leagues, seven FA Cups, some fabulous teams & a brand new stadium later; Arsenal are better off than they were 22 years ago.

  11. 'One of the greats of the game'published at 10:09 British Summer Time 20 April 2018

    Arsenal

And finally from Stan Kroenke: “We have high ambitions to build on Arsene’s remarkable tenure and to honour his vision by ensuring that Arsenal competes for and wins the biggest and most important prizes in the game.

“We must now focus on making a strong finish to the season and ask our millions of fans around the world to join us in paying appropriate tribute to one of the greats of Arsenal’s history and one of the greats of the game.”

I think it's probably the right time for him to move on. He's done some very impressive things over the years but the league has moved further forward than we have as a team. Hopefully we can win the Europa League and he can go out on a high. Fingers crossed we get someone good to replace him. Would love for it to be Allegri or Simeone personally.

    Jordan, Nottingham

A legend of the Premier League who revolutionised the game. I hope he will be honoured by every football fan on his departure. Thank you Wenger.

Mike Cowan: Now he's announced he's leaving I hope Arsenal fans rally round, get behind him and give Wenger the send off he deserves. Whatever you think of him now he deserves our respect for everything he did for the club. He's a genuine legend regardless of recent history.

We will keep an eye on today's press conferences going into the weekend's games in the Premier League and FA Cup, but there is only one place to start...
