    1500m

Laura Weightman speaking to BBC Sport after winning bronze in the 1500m: "I'm really happy I got the bronze, slightly disappointed as I wanted to run hard from the start and go with Laura.

"I knew the girls behind me had massively sat off the pace so I wanted to take that risk and commit. I knew the line was coming and that I had to hang on as well as I could - I'm delighted."

    5000m

And Israel's Lonah Salpeter - who thought she had finished when there was actually one more lap to go - is edged off the podium.

The 29-year-old celebrated what she thought was a silver medal after mistaking Sifan Hassan's injection of pace for the sprint finish.

Instead the race continued. She had to get back started, but with the fuel levels low and the momentum gone, she was always floundering.

    1500m

Laura Muir speaking to BBC Sport after winning 1500m gold: "I just knew the girls had a good finish so the longer I left it the riskier it would be so I just ran as hard as I could for the finish line. It was great Laura could get in behind me too.

"It was probably the most pressure I've been under in terms of the level of expectation to win, it was something new for me and I think I've handled it really well. I'm just thankful for the support I've had from back home and here as well."

An impressive opener from Britain's Nathan Douglas who produces a season's best of 16.71m to claim second place after the first set of jumps.

Britain's Sophie Hitchon lies eighth with 70.52m after four throws in the hammer final. Poland's Anita Wlodarczyk probably has it wrapped up already after a third-round 77.82m extended her lead.

Young Adam Hague has recorded a personal best of 5.65m in the pole vault. The competition is continuing above that with Piotr Lisek clearing 5.80m and London 2012 champion Renaud Lavillenie keeping his powder dry after a 5.65 first-time clearance.

Twelve years ago a 23-year-old Nathan Douglas won European silver for Great Britain in Gothenburg, sparking hopeful comparisons with the great Jonathan Edwards who famously set a world record at the same venue another 11 years back.

It has not quite worked out like that.

A European indoor silver is about the best that has followed, but Douglas won his fourth national title in Birmingham earlier this year and so is back on the European stage at the age of 35.

In the absence of Portugal's world leader Pedro Pablo Pichardo - who didn't get IAAF approval in time for the championships after his swap from Cuba in December - Azerbaijan's Alexis Copello is perhaps the form man.

    Sifan HassanImage source, Getty Images

Why didn't Sifan Hassan double up? Step forward the Berlin 2018 schedule once more.

Just as having the 1500m qualifying rounds on the same day as the 800m final, put paid to Laura Muir's hopes of combining the two events, Hassan has been forced to choose.

The finals of the 1500m and 5,000m are just 15 minutes apart.

Hassan is red-hot favourite for this longer distance, being a staggering 30 seconds faster than any of her European rivals.

With Laura Weightman aimed at the 1500m, fellow Briton Eilish McColgan leads the chasing pack on paper. She is joined by Melissa Courtney, who won bronze for Wales at the Commonwealth Games earlier this year, and 2016 European Championships bronze medallist Steph Twell.

    Paula Radcliffe
Women's marathon world record holder on BBC TV

Laura Muir has run that on guts and strength, as has Laura Weightman to get the bronze.

Laura Weightman was closing down on Laura Muir earlier and that was what was so tiring on Weightman's legs in the closing stages.

An historic run and a really strong run - Laura Muir has been criticised before but she has been so much better than the rest of the field today.
