David Welsh-Bolingoli: Think I'll stay up and watch the #NFLDraft for the 1st time tonight. Reap the benefits from working at home. #Chiefs last pick though, that's what we get for being champions.

Tom: Green Bay picking all the way down at 30 tonight - but as long as we draft a receiver with pace to help Aaron Rodgers take us one or two steps further than last season I’ll be happy.

  8. Rodgers keeps falling after 49ers snubpublished at 00:58 British Summer Time 24 April 2020

    Memorable draft moments: 2005

Rodgers was eventually smiling on draft day

Aaron Rodgers grew up a San Francisco 49ers fan having spent most of his childhood in California. He came into the 2005 draft as one of the top quarterback prospects and his beloved 49ers had the first pick.

But the 49ers went for Alex Smith and, to add insult to injury, Rodgers just kept on falling. He cut a lonely figure in the green room and the colour drained from his face as he ended up waiting for four-and-a-half hours before he finally got the call, from the Green Bay Packers, with the 24th pick.

"I want to go to a team that wants me," Rodgers said at the time. "They (the 49ers) obviously didn't want me and didn't think I was going to help the team out. Green Bay does."

He had to wait three years to succeed Brett Favre but in his third season as a starter, Rodgers led the Packers to a Super Bowl win and remains one of the top QBs in the league.

Smith has never reached the big show and was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2013, then the Washington Redskins in 2018, but after the Chiefs won this year's Super Bowl, Patrick Mahomes praised Smith for helping him make the transition to the NFL when he was Smith's back-up in his rookie year, 2017.

  9. 'We have the opportunity to do something special tonight'published at 00:57 British Summer Time 24 April 2020

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell was also asked how it might go tonight: "We don't know. This is new to us and we'll all learn something but I think it'll be an awful lot of fun. Of all the drafts I've been around - and it's been a lot - this is going to be the most memorable of them all. It's just got all the elements.

"I think we've got 200-plus remotes out there. The focus and interest in this, under the circumstances, has been extraordinary and we're going to have the opportunity to do something special tonight, not just by creating some entertainment and a diversion from all that we've been going through but also with the draft-a-thon, raise some important funds for people who need it right now."

  10. 'We all need, somebody, to lean on'published at 00:56 British Summer Time 24 April 2020

That's what Jennfier Hudson just sang on the broadcast, with some backing vocals via video link. All running smoothly so far. Less than 10 minutes to go.

  11. 'I get booed enough at home!'published at 00:53 British Summer Time 24 April 2020

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has already spoken on the draft broadcast. One tradition of the draft is the fans booing the commissioner and, since he's at home this year, he was asked if his family was to fill in.

"I get enough of that at home," he laughed. "That's a big part of the draft and something I really enjoy. It's a great way to interact with our fans and I'll give you a hint, we're going to bring that in tonight. You'll hear a lot of that. It'll be fun. It'll be a way for our fans to be able to express themselves and be part of the stuff, and that's important for us."

He's not joking either. The NFL have asked fans to post videos of them booing using #BooTheCommish. For each post, sponsor Bud Light is donating $1 (up to $500,000) to tonight's draft-a-thon.

A separate draft-a-thon broadcast is running to raise funds for six charities heavily involved in the effort tot fight coronavirus.

Eli Manning, Philip Rivers, Larry Fitzgerald and Ben Roethlisberger were all selected in the first 11 picks.

By the end of the 2007 season, both Roethlisberger and Manning had been the starting quarterback for Super Bowl-winning teams - the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New York Giants, respectively.

The 2004 draft then became the first to produce two QBs with multiple Super Bowl wins - 'Big Ben' won his second in the 2008 season, and Eli his second in 2011. Manning retired this year while Roethlisberger was injured for most of last season.

Rivers, meanwhile, has racked up nearly 60,000 passing yards to sit sixth on the all-time list, immediately above Manning and Roethlisberger, and only left the Chargers in the off-season to join the Indianapolis Colts.

As for Fitzgerald, the wide receiver is still with the Arizona Cardinals and is second on the all-time list for receiving yards behind Jerry Rice.

  13. 'My dreams come true today'published at 00:45 British Summer Time 24 April 2020

The draft 'gurus' have been doing mock draft after mock draft, and many have cornerback Jeff Okudah being selected with the third pick. Will that be the Detroit Lions or will someone trade up?

  14. Crawford becomes a Titanpublished at 00:44 British Summer Time 24 April 2020

Menelik Watson and Jack Crawford were both drafted and went on to spend longer than average in the NFL.

Watson has been without a team since leaving the Denver Broncos in 2017 but still hopes to return to the league. Crawford, who is also 31, signed a one-year deal with the Tennessee Titans earlier this month.

Osi Umenyiora was following the 2003 draft on his couch when he found out he'd been drafted by the New York Giants - way earlier than he expected.

Fellow British-born players Menelik Watson and Jack Crawford have also experienced the highs and lows of the draft, and they told us all about it.

"You go through a mixed bag of emotions," said Watson. "You're excited, anxious, frustrated. Then once you get that call the disappointment, the anguish, the nerves all just disappear."

  17. Which team could move up the draft board?published at 00:31 British Summer Time 24 April 2020

After three straight losing seasons, the Miami Dolphins look most likely to move up (from fifth).

"What if somebody like Miami, who has a lot of draft capital (three first-round picks), gives Cincinnati a deal they can't refuse to take that first pick?" asked Jason Bell. "That's the only reason Burrow wouldn't go to Cincinnati."

"But who are Miami going to pick?" said Osi Umenyiora. "They have so many needs on the team. I think Cincinnati will go for Burrow but after that, everyone's up for grabs."

The order in which wide receivers Jerry Jeudy, CeeDee Lamb and Henry Ruggs are selected is anyone's guess, but cornerback Jeff Okudah is expected to go early.

"Detroit want a cornerback but they might move off that pick (third) for Miami or the Los Angeles Chargers to snatch the quarterback they want," Bell added. "You need those quarterbacks, and if you see a guy you love, you go up there to get him."

    Memorable draft moments: 2004

Eli Manning had to hold up a Chargers jersey before being traded

Osi Umenyiora won two Super Bowls with the New York Giants, led by Eli Manning, and the quarterback had a memorable introduction to the NFL. He made it clear before the 2004 draft that he didn't want to join the San Diego Chargers, who had the first pick. The Giants, the Mannings felt, were acceptable, so they agreed a trade with the Chargers involving fellow QB Philip Rivers, who the Giants would select with the fourth pick.

But the Mannings still had to go through the motions of going up on stage after the Chargers took him number one and although Eli declined to wear a team hat, Peyton's younger brother couldn't have looked any more awkward as he held up a San Diego jersey, while fans at the venue chanted 'Eli sucks'.

The Giants kept up their end of the bargain by taking Rivers and the deal was done. Eventually Eli got what he wanted and he was off to New York. After two Super Bowl wins, he retired at the end of last season, aged 39.
