"It was a tough race for Christine. The plan wasn't necessarily to get into the shape for her to contest this and she'll be surprised.

"A little bit fitter she should have won that race. Grenot's a good athlete but not in Christine's class. She just let them get away too much.

"We know that she starts to charge around the bend but there was just a little too much to do."

That was a blood and fury run from Italy's Libania Grenot. She went out very hard, coming into the home straight five or 10 metres ahead of the rest, and relied on sheer guts and determination to carry her home.

Ukraine's Olha Zemlyak takes silver with Indira Terrero of Spain getting bronze on a dip ahead of Christine Ohuruogu.

Ohuruogu was awarded the same time as Terrero and was only two hundredths short of Zemlyak. Short of preparation, the Briton affords herself a wry smile.

    Quick, onto the women's race...

Christine Ohuruogu looked good in the first round, a little shoddy in the heats and will need a quick return to form to grab gold tonight.

Ukrainian Olha Zemlyak and Italy's Libania Grenot are the favourites...

Time for the medals for the 110m hurdles to be handed out. And it is Swedish heptathlon great Carolina Kluft, a three-time world champion and Athens 2004 gold winner, to do the honours.

Russia's Sergey Shubenkov is on the top step with Great Britain's Will Sharman wearing silver.

You can see how that sorted itself out last night on the BBC Sport website.

"Martyn Rooney has been through it to get to this stage. He's had all those injuries and to get a gold medal finally is a fitting tribute for a great guy."

"I remember watching Martyn Rooney at the Commonwealth Games in 2006 and thinking he had a huge future in front of him. All of the problems he's had, the trials and tribulations, just vanish and disappear with that medal.

"He'll understand why working hard and really reaping the rewards makes it so very special."

Conrad Williams speaking to BBC Sport after finishing fifth: "I let the side down not getting one, two, three but I'm still happy with my first European final. It was a good race and it's great to see the guys celebrating.

"It's fantastic for Matt, he ran well and he had a lot of pressure because people expected him to perform. Rooney's so experienced but Matt's so green and he showed great resilience to hold on to second place.

"We knew we were going to come here with a strong team and if we don't get gold in the relay there's something wrong."

Martyn Rooney had to pace himself very carefully without the absent Jonathan Borlee to measure his run against outside.

He is certainly taking his time on his lap of honour, soaking up the atmosphere and the acclaim.

There was a nice moment between him and Matt Hudson-Smith who shared a hug and a flag for the photographers.

After going out hard, the red headband of Conrad Williams ended up in fifth place. No clean sweep of the podium of Team GB but Martyn Rooney and Matt Hudson-Smith were the class of the field undoubtedly.

    BBC athletics commentator

"For Martyn Rooney it's been a long journey to win gold for his country, to win gold over 400m. Since the Commonwealth Games in 2006, we've had to wait eight years for him to realise the potential he's always had. That is the sort of performance that would have won many European titles.

"Everyone was talking about Hudson-Smith and what a future he has, with a big personal best."

Matt Hudson-Smith was coming on strong. If it had been a 410m race, gold would have been all his. But Martyn Rooney had enough in the bank to hang on for a 44.71 win. Matt Hudson-Smith has a personal best of 44.75 in silver with Israel's Donald Sanford in third.

"The big question is whether we get first, second and third because the boys were just so dominant in the semi-finals.

"Matt Hudson-Smith will have a plan. He's got a bright coach in Tony Hadley and he will have gone through the whole process. Tony will have explained to him the best way to run it and now it's up to him.

"He's so naïve so he will listen to his coach because he hasn't got much choice and he'll go with someone who knows. It's going to be tough but I hope we can get the one, two three."

Phew. Only yellow for Matt Hudson-Smith as the starters decide that he squirmed in the blocks rather than actually making a full-blooded false start.

  17. Postpublished at 17:52 British Summer Time 15 August 2014

False start! And it looks like it is Matt Hudson-Smith. What will the starters decide to dish out as punishment? It could be a straight red card for the Briton. Which would be a sad way for his campaign to come to an end...

Hudson-Smith's fellow Briton Martyn Rooney crosses his fingers as the camera zooms in on his face.

The 27-year-old won his semi-final in 45.30 - two tenths slower than Hudson-Smith. It could be a straight slug-out for gold, especially with Jonathan Borlee of Belgium having withdrawn.

The 400m men emerge from the call room, stepping out onto the track and looking skywards in surprise at the sudden burst of rain that has preceded their arrival.

Great Britain's Matt Hudson-Smith, the man who anchored home England to relay gold in similar conditions at Glasgow 2014, still stubbornly has his shades in place.
