Usain Bolt fiddles with his gold chain.. the caller calls the finalists to their marks...
Steve Cram
BBC athletics commentator
"The ghost of his past has been following Justin Gatlin around like a shadow."
Usain Bolt hides his faces, then shrugs his shoulders as he's introduced to the crowd, the majority of whom are rooting for the defending champ. The Jamaican can still smile despite the eyes of the world on him.
Gatlin, Steve Cram reminds us, is unbeaten in 28 races. His personal best - his season's best - is 9.74 seconds, while Bolt's best this year 9.87 seconds. The Jamaican, though, the six-time Olympic champion, usually performs on the biggest stages.

Former British sprinter on BBC Radio 5 live
"This is not the normal Usain Bolt we see before the start of a race, but he has a rival in Justin Gatlin who is not scared and thinks he is here to slay Usain Bolt."
The lanes you need to watch: five (Bolt) and seven (Gatlin). Others are competing, of course, but this race is about two men.
A gentleman is playing the piano. Colin Jackson tells us he's the world's best pianist. But this is no time for chopsticks or any sort tune - we're only here to watch another sort of virtuoso performance.
Stephen Collins: Come on Usain! Do it for all the good guys and girls in sport. We need you to rescue athletics (again!).
Dan Gardiner: Dear sporting gods, you messed up with #MayweatherPacquiao, external - this is your chance to redeem yourself...#BoltGatlin, external.

BBC Sport athletics expert & 400m world record holder
"If this was a poll about who do you want to win, it would be 98 per cent Bolt and two per cent Gatlin - if that."
Rower and Olympic bronze medallist Will Satch is watching. Are you?
Tom Fordyce
Chief sports writer in Beijing
"It's not full in the Bird's Nest for a 100m final that has drawn so much attention around the world, but there is still that tightness in the air that every big sprint showdown creates. Those semi-finals earlier this evening strengthen a conviction that has been growing all week: if Usain Bolt were to beat Justin Gatlin tonight, it might just be his greatest miracle of all."
The muscle-flexing showmen are on the start line. No dancing, bouncing or hi-jinx from Usain Bolt at the moment as he ensures his blocks are perfect.
Earlier, we asked who you thought would win and 51% think Usain Bolt will successfully defend his title, while 40% have opted for Justin Gatlin.

BBC Sport athletics expert & 400m world record holder
"This was the part that I loved, I loved being in the call room before the race, because I was the favourite. Right now Usain Bolt isn't crazy about being in this position because he's not favourite going into this final. He can still win the race, it's just a case of whether he's made the necessary adjustments to do so."
Mike Costello
BBC Radio 5 live athletics commentator
"If Gatlin wins this 100m title it will be a result that will haunt the sport, even though he is here because the rules allow him to be here."
Quote MessageI was 50 years ahead of my time. If I could run now with modern technology I could run 9.4secs. Nobody can run 100m like Ben Johnson. I have more talent than any sprinters running today. I'm the best ever.

The next race on the track will be the men's 100m final. I'm not sure whether we've mentioned it. Earlier, Ben Johnson - perhaps the world's most famous drugs cheat - was on BBC Radio 5 live, talking about the race everyone's talking about.
Quote MessageAthletics is now weak. There is no rivalry, they are trying to create one between Usain Bolt and Justin Gatlin but it is not really there. It's not Muhammad Ali v Joe Frasier or me v Carl Lewis. The excitement has gone. If Gatlin wins he's the best guy. Whoever crosses the line first deserves it.

Genzebe Dibaba puts her foot to the metal and glides by her rivals and into the lead... Laura Muir in third place coming into the final bend, chasing Dibaba and Faith Chepngetich Kipyegon.
Laura Muir produced a personal best 3:58.66 in Monaco so she's in shape. The Scot third after 800m, pony tail swishing... Muir biding her time...
There's British interest in the second 1500m semi-final. Laura Muir is lining-up against the great Genzebe Dibaba, among others. The Ethiopian broke the 1500m world record in Monaco so she should ease through to the final.
After finishing 11th in the men's hammer final, Britain's Nick Miller told BBC Sport: "I enjoyed it a lot and making the final is a step in the right direction. I didn't feel like myself today so unfortunately that was not so good. It makes me want to come bakck stronger next year."
