Can anyone stop Justin Gatlin?
British champion CJ Ujah was fifth in 10.05 seconds. The young Brit, who has dipped under 10 seconds in his young career, does not make the final. "It's a huge experience," says Ujah.
"To be honest, I'm not too impressed with that performance, but I hope to do Great Britain proud next year. I didn't execute my start, but I will sit down with my coach and review what happened."

BBC Sport athletics expert & 400m world record holder
Quote MessageJustin Gatlin pushes back against the track and he has a patient transition. He is so smooth and such a powerful runner with a clean technique. That 9.77 was with him easing up - there's plenty in the tank and it will be very hard for Usain Bolt now.

Colin Jackson
Two-time world 110m hurdles champion
Quote MessageWill Justin Gatlin be able to push it more in the final and go under 9.7? The way he's running, he looks like the clear favourite.
John McEnerney: Bolt looked like he was leaving the pub after a massive session at the start.
Andrew Priestley: You're a very lucky boy Usain! You were frighteningly close to missing out on the final all together! Gatlin will be smiling.
Colin Jackson
Two-time world 110m hurdles champion
Quote MessageEven with all his problems you cannot take away from this man his running. He is brilliant! When you talk about how to demonstrate a 100m race, Justin Gatlin has it all. He goes under the 9.8 mark on a regular basis.
How fast can Justin Gatlin go? Will he turn the screw, heap more pressure onto Usain Bolt's shoulders? Yes! A 9.77-second run from Gatlin and he looked like he could have gone quicker. Blimey. Who knows what he'll produce in the final.
The American drove well, led at halfway and maintained his pace. His compatriot Mike Rogers was second so also goes through automatically.
Semi two - GATLIN
A slight pause before the next round of semi-finalists are introduced to the Bird's Nest ticket holders. Justin Gatlin in this one, a mixed reception for the American.

World 60m indoor champion Richard Kilty, who qualified as one of the fastest losers, goes in the third semi-final at 12:24. The biggest names in his race are Asafa Powell and Tyson Gay.
Time for the second semi-final...
Bolt scrapes through
Michael Johnson
BBC Sport athletics expert & 400m world record holder
"He's trying way too hard in the first few metres, and not being relaxed at the start. We saw exactly what we saw yesterday. He used his long stride to get himself back into the race. He's saying to himself, 'that was ridiculous'. That's not the Usain Bolt we're used to seeing."
Darren Campbell
Former British sprinter on BBC Radio 5 live
"That turbo boost Bolt has, he found it when he had to and he opened up his stride to come through. It wouldn't have scared Justin Gatlin. My head says Gatlin but I will never rule out Usain Bolt - he's done it over and over again."

Usain Bolt shaking his head on the track. Should he leave the blocks at a snails pace in the final, Justin Gatlin will probably become world champion.
Second in that race was Andre De Grasse, also in 9.96! Trayvon Bromell was third in 9.99 and there was a Chinese record for Bingtian Su in 9.99.
Colin Jackson
Two-time world 110m hurdles champion
"Bolt's putting himself under pressure right at the start. He needs to be good in his first 10 metres but he pushed out so far that he almost stumbled and he had to haul himself through that field. He left himself only 80 metres to get through and that was hard for him."
Steve Cram
BBC athletics commentator
Quote MessageYou cannot start like that! If you don't start well, you are in trouble. Usain Bolt had to muster everything there just to get through!
Usain Bolt, as he always does, crosses himself as he crouches into position. Silence. Then - Bang.
A terrible start from Bolt, seventh at 50m... he trails up until 60m, three athletes are still ahead of him, it's touch and go whether he will finish in the top two... but he narrowly wins in 9.96.
Usain Bolt says some words into the camera, I couldn't quite hear what was said, but the Jamaican looks as relaxed as ever. The semi-finalists are being introduced to the crowd. Once formalities are done with, we'll be all set to go.

Right then. Usain Bolt is out on the track. The men's 100m semi-finals are upon us. Deep breaths. Let's not start hyperventilating just yet.
News filtering through that Laura Weightman, who fell badly during her heat, has pulled out of the 1500m semi-finals this afternoon on medical advice. The Steve Cram-coached athlete suffered concussion and has been advised not to run. "She was dazed for quite a while afterwards," says Cram. "She's absolutely in no state to do herself justice."
