Remember, when Priscah Jeptoo won this race a few years ago her last two miles were absolutely phenomenal.

Kenya's Jeptoo won the Great North Run in 2013.

Poor David Rudisha, double 800m Olympic champion, has been stood at the start line giving out high fives for at least half an hour now. I reckon if he keeps that up he'll be in line for a wrist injury.

They're still setting off in the mass participation event as the women's race comes into the final stages. We'll be taking a greater look at that once the elite races finish, so stay tuned.

Mo is enjoying himself out there, comfortably settled in place to take his third Great North Run title, with Ritzenhein now dropping off the front as 10k is ticked off in 28 minutes 32 seconds.

He very nearly didn't make it to the start line however...

  5. Kenyans take leadpublished at 11:07 British Summer Time 11 September 2016

Kenyan compatriots Jeptoo and Cheruiyot are working together to stretch a telling lead out over Tirunesh Dibaba now, who will have to do all the legwork on her own to close that gap.

Joyce Chepkirui had been looking strong in the early stages of the women's race, but she's now dropped off, leaving Dibaba, Cheruiyot and Jeptoo at the front.

Similarly, three men have stretched a lead, with Farah, Ritzenhein and Emmanuel Bett streaking clear of the rest of the field.

They've picked it up to such an extent that Dibaba is definitely struggling now, this is really quick running.

Tirunesh Dibaba has been with the front group throughout, but has been lagging at the back, with the BBC commentary team in disagreement as to whether she's being canny or genuinely in trouble.

They know Mo has come through the physical and mental tribulations of the Olympics, they both respect him greatly but they know that he’s human and that he can tire, so setting off fast is exactly what they should do.
