    After becoming the first race of its kind to have it's millionth finisher in 2014, the Great North Run set out on an even more incredible task - to have a competitor from every one of the 193 United Nations states.

    Fast forward two years and they've worked wonders to ensure that 178 are on the start line. 178 different countries. Amazing.

    Colin Plews, above and below, was in celebratory mood yesterday. And who can blame him?

    Look at those temperatures! You couldn't ask for more - not too hot, but a fair splash of sunshine to brighten spirits.

    I can even confirm that it's sunny in Salford. Wonders never cease...

    13.1 miles, starting in Newcastle, progressing through the city centre, over the Tyne Bridge into Gateshead and then on into South Shields.

    Over a million people have finished the race in the past. 57,000 will be added to that number today.

    Yes, welcome to this year's Great North Run.

    We've got some rare sunshine, booming crowds and 57,000 people ready to put on their running shoes.

    The day will start at 08:00 BST when the information point opens, before the assembly point follows suit at 09:15. 

    BBC One coverage will kick off at 09:30 - follow that at the top of this page.

    The elite wheelchair race begins at 10:10, the elite women set off at 10:15 and the men, with Mo Farah looking for a triple triumph here in Newcastle, start at 10:40.

    The masses are due to begin their warm-up at 10:15, before taking the first step of 13.1 miles with the men at 10:40.

    Got all that? Good stuff, let's get cracking.
