    In qualifyingQuanera Hayes, a world indoor bronze medallist, led from the front in the first heat for the Americans, gaining a first leg lead her teammates only extended to qualify fastest overall in 3:21.66 minutes – a world-leading time.

    Natasha Hastings, who finished fourth in the 400m in Rio, also featured in the heats and the US team could be strengthened for the final by the addition of 10-time world champion Allyson Felix.

    Jamaica won the second heat in 3:23.64 minutes to qualify second fastest, as the reigning champions go for a second successive World Championships gold. Stephenie Ann McPherson, an individual bronze medallist at the 2013 World Championships, anchored the win.

    Great Britain are looking for a fourth successive podium finish having won two bronze medals and one silver at the last three World Championships. They qualified in second in their heat but a long way behind Rio gold medallists, the USA.
