Kosgei is going to win this so you have to look further back for the fun.

Sara Hall is chasing down Ruth Chepngetich for second place.

And further back still the race for the British title is on. Natasha Cockram has caught up with Naomi Mitchell and the pair are running shoulder to shoulder.

  2. Kosgei takes the bellpublished at 09:29 British Summer Time 4 October 2020

Kenyan Brigid Kosgei has just taken the bell. Feels weird to say that at the London marathon but things are pretty weird nowadays.

The world record holder is completing the last of her 19.6 laps. She's smiling and looking very strong.

American Sara Hall has just overtaken Ethiopian Ashete Bekere to take third place.

She edges in front, then kicks away. Kenyan Ruth Chepngetich has still got a decent lead in second, though.

It will be hard for these athletes. There are a lot of runners out on the course, all running at different paces and lapping each other.

    It's hard to keep track.

If you're just joining us, here's a quick rundown of some of the many differences in this year's marathon.

The runners are completing 19.6 laps of a course with the finish line in the usual place on The Mall.

The route also takes in Horse Guards Parade, Birdcage Walk and the spur road running adjacent to the front of Buckingham Palace.

There are two laps to go for the leaders.

  7. Postpublished at 09:21 British Summer Time 4 October 2020

Ruth Chepngetich is actually in danger of being caught by Ethiopian Ashete Bekere, with America's Sara Hall working hard to catch up too.

The American is on course to beat her personal best of 2:22.16.

  8. Postpublished at 09:19 British Summer Time 4 October 2020

World record holder and defending champion in London Brigid Kosgei will have two laps to go next time she crosses the line.

She is almost a minute ahead of world champion Ruth Chepngetich and looks comfortable.

  10. Partridge drops outpublished at 09:15 British Summer Time 4 October 2020

In sadder news for the British contingent: Lily Partridge has dropped out.

Steph Twell stopped earlier and now Partridge becomes the second Briton to do so. The 29-year-old was going for an Olympic qualifying time but that will have to wait.

Britain's Naomi Mitchell is running a seriously impressive race.

She finished in 2:48 last year and is on track for two and a half hours now. Lockdown training has clearly suited her.

It's intriguing how a marathon develops. Chepngetich was feeling strong and clearly now is not quite there at Kosgei's pace.

Up front, Brigid Kosgei is way ahead.

She and fellow Kenyan Ruth Chepngetich ran together for the first 18 miles but the world record holder has left her compatriot far behind and will surely win now.

Naomi Mitchell looks like she's got it really right today. She could be after a really good time.
