What a race that was. Just the small matter of the men's 800m now. That's coming up in a couple of minutes.

  4. 'Something is in the water' - Hodgkinsonpublished at 14:57 British Summer Time 27 June 2021

Keely Hodgkinson, winner of the 800m, said in her on-track interview:

"Today was who brought it on the day. It was going to be stacked.

"I'm just happy that I stayed calm and executed my race. The middle distance - something crazy is going on in the water at the minute.

"It's great for the sport. It's fun to be a part of as well as awful."

There were gasps of astonishment in the stands as teenager Keely Hodgkinson strode past Jemma Reekie and Laura Muir, both faster on paper this season, to defend the title she won last year against a far less-celebrated field.

Hodgkinson is one of the brightest prospects in Britain and, having won the European Indoor title earlier this year, it will be very interesting what she does in Japan.

  6. Hodgkinson and Reekie seal Olympic spotspublished at 14:55 British Summer Time 27 June 2021

That was a huge second lap for 19-year-old Keely Hodgkinson.

She won in 1:59.61, half a second faster than Jemma Reekie's 2:00.12.

That means Reekie and Hodgkinson will take the automatic Olympic spots, while selectors on Monday will discuss whether Laura Muir - who finished in 2:00.24 - is worthy of inclusion.

Muir is forced wide round the bend. It was a slow first lap, she should have plenty in the tank.

Jemma Reekie has taken the front in a speedy start. Keely Hodgkinson is right there with her.

Reekie suddenly slows the pace as Laura Muir comes round the side to join the leaders as they take the bell.

  13. How do athletes seal Tokyo spot?published at 14:45 British Summer Time 27 June 2021

Athletes need to have achieved the Olympic qualifying standard and finish in the top two in Manchester to guarantee themselves a place in Tokyo.

For the women's 800m, the time needed is 1:59.50 and there is no shortage of athletes who have already got that.

Athletes who do not guarantee their place today can still get in via a selection meeting on Monday before the team is announced on Tuesday.

Medallists at the British Championships also get a bonsai tree, so that's a nice bonus if you miss out on the whole Olympics thing.

    Women's 800m (14:50 BST)

We don't have long to wait before a very competitive women's 800m final.

Jemma Reekie is the fastest Briton this year and ran 2:01.46 to win her heat.

Laura Muir - who is hoping for selection in both this and the 1500m - got round in 2:05.41.

"I think I can make that Olympic final in the 800m and once there, anything can happen," she said.

"So rather than put all the eggs in one basket, I'd rather spread them out a bit."

Alexandra Bell and teenage European indoor champion Keely Hodgkinson will also be on the startline for this one.
