  1. 7,000 run in Mini Marathonpublished at 13:23 British Summer Time 2 October 2022

For the first time, the Mini Marathon was a standalone event the day before the London Marathon.

About 7,000 children took part across one-mile and 2.6km distances on Saturday - but the hope is that this will be as big as the main event by 2030.

World record holder Eliud Kipchoge was on hand to cheer them on, with Innes Fitzgerald and Henry Dover among the winners in the Under-17 races.

  3. 'Running for our country'published at 13:15 British Summer Time 2 October 2022

    Kostiantyn Bidnenko and Viktoriya Kiose

Kostiantyn Bidnenko and Viktoriya Kiose never meant to do the London Marathon. The race was something they were barely aware of when they went to bed on 23 February.

That, like so much more, changed at 5am the next day. They awoke early. Across the country, bombs were exploding, with Ukraine's capital, their hometown, Kyiv, a particular target for Russia.

Bidnenko, 35, reported for military duty. Asked if he had any medical conditions, he explained his alkaptonuria, a rare, progressive genetic disease that causes pain in the joints. It meant he couldn't serve his country on the frontline.

Via Lviv, Warsaw and Naples, Bidnenko and his fiancée Kiose arrived in London in May. But while reading the daily dispatches of death and pain back home, they felt the call of duty. Today they are running to raise money for United 24, the foundation supporting Ukraine.

"When you run with the Ukraine flag, when you hear how people support you and scream the name of your country, you feel a responsibility not only for yourself, but for your country and people too. It is a very amazing feeling," Bidnenko told BBC Sport.

  7. 'It is amazing the costume has survived'published at 13:01 British Summer Time 2 October 2022

Now, it has been far from a simple passing of the baton from Lukas to Simon.

Following his race three years ago, Lukas Bates left the costume outside a pub, agreeing that the pub landlord could have it after deciding not to take it home.

However, the costume was stolen, before eventually being found by a student, who claimed the reward of a £1,000 donation to Bates' fundraiser from presenter Piers Morgan.

Only then was it passed on to Alzheimer's Research UK and displayed in the charity's office in Cambridgeshire ever since.

"It is amazing that the costume has survived," Bates said. "I'm delighted it is going to be used again, especially as it is again for such a worthy cause."

Simon Phillips, a GP, said he has practiced bending in the tower to help him deal with the finish line, as he runs in aid of Alzheimer's Research UK in memory of his father, Robert, who died with the disease in 2016.

The costume has been on quite the journey since Lukas Bates eventually got himself over the line in it in 2019.

No idea what I'm talking about? First, take a look at this.

Remember Big Ben getting stuck at the London Marathon finish line in 2019?

Simon Phillips will be hoping for a more simple ending to his 26.2 miles today when he approaches it in the fancy dress costume which caused Lukas Bates so many issues a few years ago.

"I ran the London Marathon in 2016 and loved it, I decided if I ever ran it again I would do it in a costume," Phillips explained.

"I asked the team at Alzheimer's Research UK for costume ideas and when they said they had the famous Big Ben costume I jumped at the chance to run in it."

  11. Friends who run together...published at 12:48 British Summer Time 2 October 2022

I mentioned a few of the 28 ongoing world record attempts taking place at the London Marathon today.

Elsewhere, friends Tristan Clark, Freddie Flanagan, Freddie Wright, John Lavelle, George Peirson, and Hugh Williams are trying to break the record for the fastest marathon in a six-person costume.

They are fundraising for Brain Research UK, as Freddie’s uncle died of a brain tumour in 2012.

Their target? Last year, dressed as a chocolate caterpillar cake, Digby Walker, Ed Holderness, Ben Taylor, Oli Tipping, Guy Dixon and Charlie Mason clocked four hours 34 minutes 52 seconds.

    The Kerr family

When the Kerr family cross the finish line in the London Marathon on Sunday, it will mark the completion of their 50th marathon.

An astounding achievement for anyone, but then you learn of their story.

David and Sandra Kerr's son, Aaron, is non-verbal and has a series of complex needs including cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and a chromosome disorder which means he uses a wheelchair.

The Kerr family have completed 49 marathons to date - but this year marks the first time in which they are permitted to enter the London marathon.

That's because, until this year, wheelchair participants had to complete the 26.2 miles under their own power, with no assistance. Today, four assisted wheelchair participants, including Aaron, are taking part.

Read all about the Kerr family's story here.
