  3. KJT does not improve with shot putpublished at 18:42 British Summer Time 19 August 2023

    Heptathlon shot put

Katarina Johnson-Thompson looks nonplussed after her final throw in the shot put.

It's not better than her first effort.

It looks like she's going to slip down to fifth in the overall standings but she does have more favourable events to come.

  4. Hall adds another PBpublished at 18:39 British Summer Time 19 August 2023

    Heptathlon shot put

American Anna Hall has done it again!

No wonder she's jumping up in the air in celebration.

With her third and final throw she puts in a third PB for 14.54m.

  5. Can Lyles walk the walk in Budapest?published at 18:37 British Summer Time 19 August 2023

    Men's 100m heats

    Noah LylesImage source, Getty Images

American Noah Lyles has certainly been talking the talk in the run up to these championships.

In a recent Instagram post he boldly claimed he would run 9.65 seconds in the 100m and 19.10m in the 200.

That 200m time would smash the great Usain Bolt's world record time of 19.19 seconds set in Berlin in 2009.

The 200m is Lyles' favoured event but he's still among the contenders in the 100m, which begins shortly.

Britain's Zharnel Hughes is the fastest man in the year this year while we should also get a head-to-head between American defending world champion Fred Kerley and Italian Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs.

    Men's 1500m heats

I say Elliot Giles is through but replays show he gave one of his competitors a little shove in the back as the jostling for positions went on in that heat.

We'll have to wait and see if there's any protest in that.

  7. Giles qualifies for 1500m semi-finalpublished at 18:34 British Summer Time 19 August 2023

    Men's 1500m heats

A strong finish from Elliot Giles gets him through in the men's 1500 heats.

That means all three British men will be in tomorrow's semi-finals, after the three also women qualified this morning.

    Men's 1500m heats

On the track now is the final men's 1500m heat.

Great Britain's Elliot Giles is in this one.

He needs to finish in the top six to join Josh Kerr and Neil Gourley in the semi-finals.

    Heptathlon shot put

Katarina Johnson-Thompson cannot improve with her second throw in the shot put, managing a 13.36m.

She'll have one more chance to limit her losses.

Hughes breaks men's 200m British record

Great Britain's Zharnel Hughes goes into these championships as the fastest man in the world this year.

The 28-year-old also ran 19.73 seconds to break John Regis' 30-year 200m British record at last month's London Diamond League, less than 30 days after smashing Linford Christie's 100m record in 9.83 - the fastest time by anyone in 2023.

He is aiming to become the first British man to make the world 100m podium since Darren Campbell 20 years ago.

The heats begin at 18:43 BST.

  11. Another PB for Hallpublished at 18:26 British Summer Time 19 August 2023

    Heptathlon shot put

Another PB from Anna Hall, albeit only by one centimetre, has strengthened her position in the heptathlon.

Chari Hawkins, who started this evening's session in third a smidge ahead of Katarina Johnson-Thompson has thrown 14.40m too.

  12. 'I knew I had enough'published at 18:25 British Summer Time 19 August 2023

    Men's 1500m heats

Britain's Neil Gourley, speaking to BBC Sport after qualifying from his 1500m heat: "I knew I had enough left to go back and go again. You know what you need to do. There's no advantage. It is going to get a lot more cagey which is fun to watch for the spectators."

  13. Gourley's big sigh of reliefpublished at 18:22 British Summer Time 19 August 2023

Phew. Neil Gourley will be breathing a big sigh of relief after that one.

The Briton said before the championships that he'd be selling himself short if he didn't arrive with the intention of taking gold in Budapest but he looked in a rather awkward position on the back straight.

The European indoor silver medallist looks calm enough as he comes through in a frantic finish. It was certainly a stressful watch.

  14. 'I've got better every year'published at 18:20 British Summer Time 19 August 2023

    Men's 1500m heats

Josh Kerr spoke to BBC Sport after qualifying from his 1500m heat: "I just wanted to create a bit of space. I had the gears in case it was needed. For me, I've got better mostly every year. I've had no days off in terms of illness and injury. I'm just looking to put three good performances together and hopefully that brings me a medal."

  15. Briton Gourley throughpublished at 18:19 British Summer Time 19 August 2023

    Men's 1500m heats

    Well done, Neil Gourley!

That pedestrian first lap means it's a mad finish for the line in the second men's 1500m heat with all of the runners in contention.

Britain's Gourley looks like he's boxed in but manages to squeeze his way through the tightest of gaps to qualify.

  16. Johnson-Thompson under way in shot putpublished at 18:17 British Summer Time 19 August 2023

    Heptathlon shot put

Katarina Johnson-Thompson has started with a solid enough 13.64m in the shot put.

She'll still want to improve that up towards her PB of 13.92m.

    Men's 1500m heats

The second men's 1500m heat has started with very slow first lap.

Britain's Neil Gourley is in this one.

  18. Strong start from American Hallpublished at 18:14 British Summer Time 19 August 2023

    Heptathlon shot put

Anna Hall is the favourite for the heptathlon and is also the early leader after this morning's action.

The American has just laid down with a marker with a personal best throw of 14.26m.

Katerina Johnson-Thompson will be up shortly. Her PB is 13.92m so, unless something remarkable happens, she'll be losing ground to Hall in this event.

The men's discus qualification round is just getting under way.

Britain's only representative in this one is Lawrence Okoye. He is 13th to throw.

The qualification mark is 66.50m or, failing that, a place in the top 12.

  20. Ingebrigtsen & Kerr safely throughpublished at 18:09 British Summer Time 19 August 2023

    Men's 1500m heats

All three of those athletes who fell got up to carry on but cannot get close to qualifying.

Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen wins the heat as expected but he has Britain's Josh Kerr on his shoulder as he crosses the line.

A good run from both men.
