Defending champion Fred Kerley is in trouble after finishing only third.

    What was his time?

Oblique Seville won that one impressively in 9.90.

A false start in a major championships race featuring Zharnel Hughes? That was terrifying for a split second as the TV cameras here initially followed the Briton in the aftermath of Akani Simbine's error.

As hinted in yesterday's hints, it is the start which is threatening to cost Hughes here.

We know he can't get out as quick as others due to his height but there's a lot of room for improvement there if he can get that right in the final.

And that is the main thing. Hughes, the fastest man in the world this year (have we mentioned that one yet?) has given himself a shot at a first individual global medal.

    Men's 100m semi-final

The wry smile on Zharnel Hughes' face suggests he knows that was not his best.

Jamaica's Ryiem Forde was third and, sadly for Great Britain, has nudged Eugene Amo-Dadzie out.

Ferdinand Omanyala hangs on to one of those two fastest loser spots for now.

Hughes cannot leave himself with so much work to do at the end of the race because there's going to be people who are as fast as him.

    Eeeek.

That's not the best Zharnel Hughes will run but he manages to recover from a bad start to take second behind American Christian Coleman, who ran a season's best 9.88 seconds.

Akani Simbine has gone over to look at the replay screen with the officials. I assume he wants to be allowed to run under protest but it seems he has accepted his fate.

He applauds to the crowd before disappearing into the bowels of the stadium.

Watch out for 2019 world champion Christian Coleman in this semi-final alongside Zharnel Hughes.

Hughes, in the purple and blue kit of Great Britain, is in lane seven.

He needs to finish in the top two to go through automatically.

  12. Lyles makes statementpublished at 15:42 British Summer Time 20 August 2023

Wow, that's a statement from Noah Lyles.

The American LOVED that run and almost added another 100m on in celebration, drawing admiration from the crowd.

He delivers a season-best 9.87 seconds, having predicted he'll run that rapid 9.65 in the final.

That's a fine showing from Eugene Amo-Dadzie, who has given himself a chance as he enjoys himself in the 'q' room. As many suspected, Marcell Jacobs is just not fit enough to compete.

Can Zharnel Hughes respond to that performance from Lyles? Most importantly, just get yourself into tonight's showpiece, please Zharnel.

A massive noise greats the athletes contesting this first men's 100m semi-final.

Noah Lyles, Marcell Jacobs, Ferdinand Omanyala and British interest in Eugene Amo-Dadzie all in the first race of the evening session! Superb.

The crowd are pumped. The athletes are ready.

I just feel sorry for those sat on the opposite side of the stadium from me, feeling the full force from the sun. They're all fiercely waving paper or whatever they can get their hands on to cool themselves down.
