    Men's 100m semi-finals

Noah Lyles gets a big ovation from the crowd as these sprinters emerge onto track. He's in the lane next to Commonwealth champion Ferdinand Omanyala of Kenya.

Britain's Eugene Amo-Dadzie is in this one too and it's a tough semi-final with only the top two going through automatically.

I haven't even mentioned Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs. He's in lane three.

  2. 'Zharnel will need his best race'published at 15:31 British Summer Time 20 August 2023

It's possible. It's more possible than it has been for a very long time. Zharnel has been at the top. The first 10 per cent of his heat wasn't great, I expect him to correct that in the semi-final. I think he'll be running to get on that podium and he'll need his best race in order to do it.

The men's 100m started yesterday with the heats and all of the big names safely made it through.

Britain's Zharnel Hughes, the fastest man in the world this year, had a poor start but came through to win his opening race.

American defending champion Fred Kerley was composed, compatriot Noah Lyles impressive but Olympic champion Marcel Jacobs was probably the scratchiest of the big names.

22-year-old Jamaican Oblique Seville caught the eye with the fastest time, a speedy 9.86 seconds.

Britain's Eugene Amo-Dadzie and Reece Prescod also progressed yesterday.

The semi-finals begin at 15:35 BST with the final at 18:10 BST.

  7. More unexpected drama to comepublished at 15:19 British Summer Time 20 August 2023

There was no shortage of drama on the opening night in Budapest, was there?

As you can see, Saturday's events left many in the stadium with their hands on their heads in disbelief.

After Sifan Hassan and Femke Bol both suffered those costly late falls at the end of the 10,000m and mixed 4x400m relay respectively, what will the World Championships have in store for us tonight?

    Expect the unexpected...

Away from the heptathlon, Dina Asher-Smith made a solid start to her 100m campaign earlier in Budapest.

The 2019 champion was second in her heat in a time of 11.04 seconds.

In what promises to be a fascinating event, American Sha'Carri Richardson was quickest.

Jamaica legend Shelley-Ann Fraser-Pryce won her heat while Briton Daryll Neita qualified a smidge quicker than Asher-Smith in 11.03.

Sadly Imani-Lara Lansiquot has disqualified for a false start.

    Michael Johnson
Four-time Olympic gold medallist athlete on BBC TV

The favourite is faltering and that's why we have the races, you can't put medals on people until they actually produce. Anna Hall hasn't been at her best. I think that has helped Katarina. She is a special athlete and has the experience.

  10. 'It's going to be close'published at 15:14 British Summer Time 20 August 2023

We know Anna Hall is a fantastic 800m runner, but is she capable in these conditions here with a slight injury? Kat, again, a very competent 800m runner. It's going to be close.

It's going to be great to watch, I am very glad I am not in that 800m race. It's going to be very fast and intense.

As ever in the heptathlon it all comes down to time over the 800m and what that equates to in points.

We reckon KJT's buffer over all is just under three seconds.

But Hall is a superb 800m runner and has a personal best of two minutes and two seconds, four seconds better than Johnson-Thompson's.

Can she deliver that sort of time under pressure and with an injury niggle?

    Time will tell...

An incredible performance, you would not expect it. Kat's had such a turbulent few years. It was a great high winning the world championships in 2019 and to come here under the radar. All the expectations on Anna Hall and really so, but Kat has performed. She's got a smile on her face.

If you were otherwise engaged by a certain football match this morning - don't worry I won't blame you - then you've missed quite the morning for Katarina Johnson-Thompson.

The Briton started the day second but jumped the further than anyone in the long jump and then threw a lifetime best in the javelin, historically one of her weaker events, to take the overall lead.

That came after American Anna Hall, the leader overnight, emerged with strapping on her left leg and disappointed in the long jump.

Hall did find a good final throw in the javelin to keep herself in contention but has dropped down to third.

It all comes down to the 800m tonight.

It is absolutely scorching in Budapest today.

After yesterday's rain-delayed start the sun has been shining non-stop and there's barely a cloud in the sky, with temperatures tickling 35 degrees as the second night of action approaches.

While Saint Stephen's Day is a big deal in Hungary - it could prove a huge occasion for GB too.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson has given herself a very real chance of winning a stunning and unexpected second world title, while Zharnel Hughes will look to first navigate his semi-final before taking a crack at a first global medal.

It's going to be fast, furious and a lot of fun.

But, whisper it, there could be cause for celebration tonight from a British perspective at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson goes into the final event of the heptathlon in gold medal position while the 100m men's world champion will be crowned tonight.

Zharnel Hughes is the fastest man in the world this year.
