    Bellew v Makabu

One thing I will say for Ilunga Makubu is his name is superb. It's like something from 1980's classic Coming to America and that my friends is a top, top film.

The fighters will of course walk through the tunnel Everton's players use on a matchday for this one. 'Everton FC, home of the Blues' reads a sign just at the end of the tunnel.

That will probably mean little to Ilunga Makubu. The same can not be said for Bellew who could be forgiven for brewing a few tears as the moment becomes reality.

    Bellew v Makabu

So how do you think these fighters are feeling?

Ilunga Makubu looks pretty chilled as he stands up in his dressing room and is instructed to throw some shots at the pads.

The Congolese fighter has spent the last few weeks training in Preston as he did the promo work for this contest.

So good is Tony Bellew's talk on the fight game, he landed a big role in the most recent film in the Rocky franchise.

The Liverpudlian teamed up with none other than Sylvester Stallone to play 'Pretty' Ricky Conlan - a trash-talking fighter who defends his world title successfully against Rocky's charge - Adonis Creed.

Bellew admits he began work by addressing the Hollywood a-lister as "Mr Stallone" and was blown away when Sylvester told him to go with "Sly because we are friends now."

By February of this year the film had gross earnings of over $109m at the box office, that's around £70m.

  7. A talker from the startpublished at 21:29 British Summer Time 29 May 2016

One of my earliest jobs back in newspaper days was to attend a Tony Bellew news conference.

This was before Tony Bellew was Tony Bellew if you know what I mean? He was still very much pushing his name as hard as he could.

If memory serves, the gent he was due to fight had pulled out of a previous contest with the Bomber because of baby sitting issues.

"On Saturday, I'm going to babysit him", Bellew told reporters.

From the sublime lines to the ridiculous, Bellew so often delivers. His fight talk landed him some Hollywood pennies you know...

Matthew Whitworth: Bellew has already fought there. Just watched a documentary about a young lad called Adonis Creed who got ko'd by him there.

Good spot Matthew. We are on to that next...

    Smith beats Makabu

So we can say the Smith family will have a good night. Three brothers, three wins. Now on to the big one.

    Smith keeps it going

We have also seen Paul Smith Jr show he has a bit more to give at the age of 33 after he out pointed Bartlomiej Grafka, external. Smith is of course rebuilding after high-profile defeats at world level to Andre Ward and Arthur Abraham on two occasions.

British light-heavyweight champion Hosea Burton smashed through Jozsef Kormany in two rounds and there has also been a win for local fighter Tom Farrell over Kofi Yates. A good scrap lands Farrell a shot at the British super-lightweight title.

    Fury's nod to Price

It has been a perfect night for home fighters so far and heavyweight David Price is probably the stand-out result.

He took care of Vaclav Pejsar, external in two rounds to bounce back from defeat.

"Great win for David Price good to have u back in the mix big man," tweeted world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury.

Callum Smith - who should get a shot at a super-middleweight world title before too long - took part in an eight round contest with Argentine Cesar Reynoso in order to stay active.

It took six rounds to get the job done after flooring his man a few times throughout the bout.

Smith wasn't all too happy with himself but a win is a win.

  12. Round eightpublished at 21:22 British Summer Time 29 May 2016

    Stephen Smith beats Daniel Brizuela

Job done for Stephen Smith. A powerful right hand gets Daniel Brizuela running and then he's pinned to the ropes where a left to the body lands. It's all over from here really, Brizuela knows he's done. A right hand to the body sees him crouch down on the ropes and he's practically begging for it to be waved off.

Nice work from Stephen Smith, he just kept the pressure up, kept the heat on his man and eventually he cracked. Nothing huge about that stoppage, he just overwhelmed him with volume and work rate.

I'm going for Bellew on points, you can just sense the roar at Goodison after such a scenario.

Some of you are pointing out that Tony Bellew has fought at this stadium before? Well spotted and we will get to that soon.

  15. Round sevenpublished at 21:19 British Summer Time 29 May 2016

    Smith v Brizuela

Stephen Smith's lean build packs some explosive movements. He shakes the shoulders in his stance, good head movement as he hunts an opening. Daniel Brizuela has not given up many so far, all of Swifty's meaningful moments have been smashes through the guard or to the body.

It's his fight on points by a landslide but we have six rounds to go yet. A straight right at the end of the rounds gets a mix of glove and Brizuela's face.

At the age of 30 and after 34 fights, Brizuela is an experienced guy so he won't go anywhere easily. He'll dig in. A good workout for Smith this.

    Bellew v Makabu

If you're just joining us we are taking a lookback at some great British boxing nights at football stadia. Number two on our list brings us to a colossal rivalry.

Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank perhaps deserve some credit for going at it outdoors at Old Trafford in October of 1993. I mean, it's not like you're guaranteed the weather on these shores at this time of year.

Anyway, the public got a tight affair, a draw no less. At least both men could leave with their world titles in the super middleweight division

  18. Round fourpublished at 21:10 British Summer Time 29 May 2016

    Smith v Brizuela

Two jabs from Stephen Smith, none land but he danced into them with energy. Taking the centre of the ring, he backs Brizuela up and these two are happy to trade in close. Two more jabs land from Smith as we near the halfway point in the round. A right hand to the body, that was a nasty shot and Brizuela had to pause. The handywork is heavy from the Liverpudlian, you can sense his hands are dense, like cauliflower soaked in gravy.

Good variation in the clench, a few little upper cuts and then a swinging right to the obliques, lovely variety. He's the energy in that ring, he's bringing the fight and asking questions, Brizuela is just trying to answer them and has no time to think of his own.

  19. The dream snatcherpublished at 21:04 British Summer Time 29 May 2016

    Bellew v Makabu

We are doing a lot of talking about Tony Bellew's dream.

So what's your dream? The one thing you really, really long for?

Now imagine you get so close to it, the scene is set, you can almost touch it and then, from nowhere, it's ripped away from you.

Imagine the sense of loss, the regret over missed opportunity. Tony Bellew may well be fighting in his dream setting but the goal - the WBC cruiserweight world title - can easily be denied.

Our lookback through stadium high points has to visit the Welsh capital.

Sauntering through an unbeaten career, there were times when Joe Calzaghe felt under appreciated. His camp believed he did not get the credit he deserved but there can be no doubt as to which moment made the masses stand up and take notice.

We go back to 2007 at the Millennium Stadium when Wales roared Calzaghe to victory over Mikkel Kessler, a win which unified the super-middleweight division. Suddenly Calzaghe was dripping in belts under the Welsh night sky.
