  1. Round Twopublished at 21:03 British Summer Time 29 May 2016

    Smith v Brizuela

Two rounds into this super featherweight contest and it's settling down a little. Daniel Brizuela lands two slappy left hands as the round nears its end but Stephen Smith is in charge and a body shot clearly hurts his man. The better work is coming from the home fighter, he's happy to get in close and not too bothered about being out of range, very game.

  2. Big Dunc in the housepublished at 21:00 British Summer Time 29 May 2016

    Bellew v Makabu

Tony Bellew has told the BBC in the past that his dream was to be the Everton number nine. I can see why, Duncan Ferguson - the club's former occupier of that number - is ringside and gets a huge ovation, raising his fist to the roars.

There are a lot of Everton songs ringing around Goodison tonight, the Blues view Bellew as their fighter, their man. No doubt his city has him at heart, but it's the blue hearts which beat strongest for him.

  3. Round Onepublished at 20:58 British Summer Time 29 May 2016

    Smith v Brizuela

Round one and with 'Swifty' across his white trunks Stephen Smith starts in a bouncy way, teeing off in flurries, swinging the left hand a lot when in close. Very much a range finder of a round though.

  4. One more fight to go...published at 20:57 British Summer Time 29 May 2016

    Bellew v Makabu

There's a dimming light over Goodison Park now. Punters clasp plastic pint glasses as they chat awaiting the big fight which will come after this contest between Stephen Smith and Daniel Brizuela.

Smith's brothers Liam and Paul have already fought, both won, so can he make it a treble? This Smith went close in a world title contest with Jose Pedraza in April. Brizuela is an experienced American and hence this is by no means a walk in the park.

What is it that makes an open-air boxing contest feel that bit more special?

Is it the confirmation that summer is upon us? The backdrop is spectacular and so rare are these events on UK shores that they just seem to tick an extra box.

The Carl Froch sledgehammer right hand to deck George Groves at Wembley in 2014 is fresh in the memory and there have been many more wonderful outdoor occasions. I'll scatter them throughout this live service and you can perhaps recall where you were at the time and how you watched each bout.

Just over a month ago sport waved farewell to Kobe Bryant as the LA Lakers basketball star scored 60 points in his final game - a win.

So as Tony Bellew fulfils a dream at Goodison Park, we want you to tell us of the best sporting fairytales. We want those moments where it just seemed it was meant to happen.

  7. A glorious settingpublished at 20:51 British Summer Time 29 May 2016

Goodison Park is bathed in evening sunshine and just looks a picture as it gets fuller and fuller by the minute.

A number of fighters, incluing the victorious Callum Smith have sampled the setting already.

Tonight this live text will also revisit some of the great stadium nights British boxing has seen. First though, I want your thoughts on sporting fairytales...

  8. Looks can be deceivingpublished at 20:49 British Summer Time 29 May 2016

    Bellew v Makabu

Tony Bellew makes no secret of the fact he does not cut the chiseled, ripped frame many of his contemporaries boast.

Again tonight he will probably look physically less conditioned than his rival, a familiar theme in Bellew bouts.

On his opponent, Bellew says: "The advantages he usually has in fights are through speed and power - he's normally faster than his opponents and punches harder than them too. In this fight, I don't think he'll have those against me.

"Every fight I go into, when I hit them, they change. I'm a nine-gear, fat racehorse and they'll see that on Sunday."

  9. KO, KO, KO...published at 20:48 British Summer Time 29 May 2016

I'll bring you a lot more on Ilunga 'Junior' Makabu shortly. He's "the most avoided" cruiserweight out there according to Tony Bellew and the bookies make the Congolese fighter favourite tonight.

He may have to battle a partizan home crowd but this guy has the tools. An eye-watering 18 knockouts in 20 fights.

You thought this was a homecoming and procession for Bellew? Thing again.

    Bellew v Makabu

    So welcome.

As you join me, Sean Dodd of Birkenhead has just beat Pasquale di Silvio on points, I'll bring you all the other results shortly.

We have Stephen Smith against Daniel Brizuela up next and I'll keep you well up on that one as I need a warm up for the frenetic typing a boxing live text requires.

Tony Bellew is at Goodison Park, much of our coverage will focus on him of course and I can tell you he's in his dressing room and looking very relaxed as Manchester-based pundit and trainer Jamie Moore gives him a hug and some well wishes.

So we find ourselves tuned into some Bank Holiday boxing, in the vast openness of a football stadium. British boxing has had some great nights in front of the stands of several clubs. I'm thinking Barry McGuigan at Loftus Road in '85, Chris Eubank v Nigel Benn at Old Trafford in '93 and of course, Carl Froch's meeting with George Groves at Wembley in 2014.

This was Goodison before the crowds flocked in for a card which features 14 fights in all. As you can see, the ring is stationed near the Gwladys Street end of the ground, where Evertonians tend to be at their most raucous.

That's right, tonight it's all about a sport which works so well for Hollywood and a man who has not only already been part of the film world, but now wants his ultimate fairytale moment.

Tony Bellew's story is one of humble beginnings. A man who through sporting talent, grit, a certain charm and without doubt opportunism, has probably already surpassed his dreams.

"I played around with boxing at 15 or 16," he once said. "I didn’t take it seriously. I still had dreams of playing for Everton but I was too fat."

The "fat kid" as he's called himself, has done OK. Tonight, Everton opens its doors to him.

Normally we'd open a live text with something wordy, something colourful to hype things up. Tonight, we'll let this man do the talking.
