Andy Ruiz Jr produced one of the biggest shocks in the history of heavyweight boxing to rip Anthony Joshua's IBF, WBO and WBA world heavyweight titles from him and tear up the division's proposed plot lines.

In a truly remarkable fight at New York's Madison Square Garden, Ruiz floored Joshua four times en route to a seventh-round stoppage which stunned this famous arena and handed the Briton his first defeat as a professional.

Joshua was a 1-25 favourite with bookmakers and will now join the likes of Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson as dominant champions to suffer losses which brought the sport to a standstill.

"I got beaten by a good fighter," said Joshua on Sky Sports. "It will be interesting to see how far he goes, but this is all part of the journey.

"He's a champion for now, I shall return."

  4. The Drake 'curse' remainspublished at 06:56 British Summer Time 2 June 2019

    This tweet didn't age well.

Earlier this year, rapper Drake was "banned" from speaking to football players or teams on as every time he was pictured with them they then lost.

He met Joshua earlier this year, who then posted a social media message saying he was 'bout to break the curse'.

Don't think Drake's going to be allowed near any athlete again soon.

That ends any doubts of whether Joshua would walk away from boxing after this stunning defeat.

  6. 'We didn't come this far to stop under pressure'published at 06:52 British Summer Time 2 June 2019

Anthony Joshua, talking at a news conference after his shock loss to Andy Ruiz, says: "I’ll see what is next and move on. He is a decent fighter and it was his chance, it can be easy to overlook someone because of their shape but he was the better man tonight and he won.

"If people ask me about Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury, I’m all ears to it and I’ll give you the answer. I still want to compete with those men but a rematch with Andy Ruiz Jr is where we are at. I got caught on the top of the head and I just didn’t recover in time, so now I brush off the cobwebs and go again."

Asked how much a setback it was in his career, he said: "Naturally it does, but if it was the end of the road I would say yes, but it’s about what is next. It is a minor setback but the locks on the door do not change and I still love the sport.

"I’m still a champ and I will rectify it to get the belts back. I come from a good family but I have dealt with more than this in life. I feel it is part of a journey I am on, and this is boxing. We didn’t come this far to stop under pressure."

He adds: "Follow your dreams, if someone puts you down don't listen, just keep working like I did. We just made history.

  18. A quick recap...published at 05:46 British Summer Time 2 June 2019

Just waking up? This is what you are waking up to. One of the biggest shocks in boxing history and this is how it unfolded...

    • Anthony Joshua, after a slow start, knocked down Andy Ruiz in the third round.
    • However, less than a minute later, Ruiz knocked down Joshua, who gets up and then gets knocked down again in the same round - the third.
    • After a quiet fourth, Joshua looked to enjoy a fifth round, but at the end of the sixth looks like he is out of energy, not engaging for the last 30 seconds.
    • Joshua is knocked down twice more in the seventh round (for the third and fourth times overall). He gets up both times, but after the second one does not respond to the referee's instructions and the referee then stops the fight.
    • Ruiz takes the IBF, WBA, WBO, IBO world titles
    • Promoter Eddie Hearn says a rematch is likely in either November or December.
  19. Joshua was losing on two cardspublished at 05:45 British Summer Time 2 June 2019

  20. 'I am not going to let these belts go'published at 05:41 British Summer Time 2 June 2019

    Luke Reddy
BBC Sport at Madison Square Garden

Andy Ruiz is doing his news conference and says he would have knocked Joshua out had the fight continued, thinks this will change his life and his mother will not have to "struggle" anymore.

"This is not going to be the only victory. I am not going to let these belts go," said Ruiz.

Anthony Joshua's promoter Eddie Hearn says this result has "not sunk in" and said that Joshua is getting checked by the doctor but is OK.

"This will eat him up bad," added Hearn. "Some fighters lose and fight back, some never come back the same."
