Kell Brook made a victorious return to the ring by knocking out American Mark DeLuca in the seventh round at his hometown Sheffield Arena. Brook, who had spent 14 months out of the ring, dominated former US marine DeLuca, 31, from the start.

He knocked his opponent down in the third round before a shuddering left hook ended the bout in the seventh.

"This is my last chance and 2020 is my year," said Brook, who has endured a testing period since 2016.

In that time he has broken both eye sockets and given up his world welterweight title to Errol Spence Jr in a dramatic fight at Bramall Lane in 2017. His last outing was an underwhelming points win over Australian Michael Zerafa in December 2018.

"You always question yourself, I believe in what I've been doing in the gym," added Brook. "I'm a new kid, a different person."

DeLuca, who has served in Afghanistan, had been beaten just once going into the bout but this was a step up in class too far for him.

On a potential fight with fellow Briton Liam Smith, who was watching at ringside, Brook said: "I don't shy away from any fighter, I have a lot of respect for him, we sparred and if it is anything like that it will be a good fight.

"I love the Smith family, when we get in there it's business."

Kell Brook beats Mark DeLuca via seventh-round knockout

Promoter Eddie Hearn tells Sky Sports: "I've never seen Kell, after five rounds sit down on the stool and not be breathing [heavily].

"DeLuca was as tough as it comes, but Kell shows he has got everything, it's not too late for Kell. His mind is on it and I believe he can become a two-weight world champion.

"It's good to see him back, and back smiling. It's been 14 months of terror and torture. I'm proud of him, I believe 2020 is going to be a good year for him.

"He's one of the old crew. He's not retiring yet, I want to see another belt around his waist."

And here is our winner Kell Brook, talking to Sky Sports: "I felt fit, the bazooka was very durable, a very smart fight, never been beaten so it was a clinical finish. I felt I boxed well in there.

"You always question yourself, I believe in what I've been doing in the gym. I'm a new kid, a different person, constantly in the gym that's what I'm doing, I live like a professional like I should be doing. This is my last chance and 2020 is my year."

On a potential fight with fellow Briton Liam Smith, Brook adds: "I don't shy away from any fighter, I have a lot of respect for him, we sparred and if it is anything like that it will be a good fight. I love the smith family, when we get in there it's business.

"I felt very comfortable in here, eating as normal, I want to get straight back into the gym on Monday and I want to be fighting in 10-12 weeks."

Ilyas Najib: For all of Kell’s dominance, and a knock out victory, I still feel Amir Khan would be too much for Brook. A final payday for both men is what the fight would be all about.

Let it go Ilyas. It's just not going to happen. If it was, it would've happened by now.

Good to see Mark DeLuca back on his feet, looking OK. He gave it a brave go and has enhanced his reputation and certainly not disgraced himself, but on the night, Kell Brook just had that extra quality.

    Round 6

Great variety from Brook, the punches are coming from all angles.

But Special K will now be looking to wrap this one up soon.

DeLuca has some swelling now around the eye. One painful night for him, but while he's still in there, still throwing, it's not done until it's done.

  12. Postpublished at 22:49 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2020

DeLuca is trying everything and giving this all he is got, but he is just being outclassed. But at the moment this is a very good night for Brook and good to get some much needed rounds in the bank, without really being challenged too much.

  13. Postpublished at 22:48 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2020

Round six of a scheduled 12. Surprised it has gone this far, good character, good spirit shown from DeLuca, who may well have a broken nose.

  14. Postpublished at 22:46 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2020

DeLuca is forced back on to the ropes and that is a place he really doesn't want to be. Brook is the one landing, the one in control. Fourteen months out of the ring, but the ring rust is falling away and in some style.

DeLuca was down in the third, saved by the bell in the fourth and taking punishment again in the fifth.

Liam Smith is ringside, a potential Brook opponent in the future, and that will be a great one if that happens.

Anything can happen in boxing but this has been a dominant and impressive performance from Brook so far.

  16. Postpublished at 22:43 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2020

DeLuca comes forward in the fourth, but then, with seconds later, he is saved by the bell as Brook unleashes another powerful combination.

Another round in the books. This could end really soon. Into number five.

  17. Postpublished at 22:41 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2020

Credit to DeLuca, that combination would've kept many down. But we're into the fourth.

In the build-up Brook said he would 'snooker the bazooka' referring to DeLuca's nickname. That's what's happening. Three rounds to Brook, a 10-8 in that third. All Brook.

  18. Postpublished at 22:39 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2020

Excellent defence from Brook getting out of the way of three swing-and-hope punches from DeLuca.

Seeing that combination again that sent the American down. A three-punch combination of beauty. Right hook, left hook, uppercut. Wonderful.

A great combination and the American is down. He hauls himself up and we continue, but Brook then lands a corking uppercut.

    Round 3

A sweeping left hook but DeLuca is smart enough to duck underneath it. The American is trying to find the angles, work the Brook body but having much joy with those ambitions as yet.

The nose of DeLuca is blooded, and then a beautiful right hook...
