Bautista with a huge sigh as he walked back to his corner at the end of the round. His face is marked up. The Mexican was at times a sitting target for Yafai towards the end of the round.

    Galal Yafai v Carlos Bautista

Bautista counters with a good right hand early in round two to remind Yafai that he should not take his opponent lightly.

Yafai has Bautista taking a big gulp of air with a thumping body shot midway through the round and then lands a few decent hits before the bell as he finishes strongly after an even start to the round.

Southpaw Yafai was whipping those lefts in with some menace. He was trying a bit too hard at times (as you might expect from someone making their pro debut) but you can already see his class. Great defence. Fast hands. He has star quality.

Brothers Kal and Gamal are living and breathing every punch from ringside.

    Galal Yafai v Carlos Bautista

Carlos Bautista looks a little stunned by this bright start by Galal Yafai, who takes the advice from his corner and settles into the round.

He gets more confident as every second passes and a few punches connect and Bautista's face is already looking a little flush.

    Good start.

"Take your time, Galal!" is the cry from his corner. He is looking a little too eager in this first round.

Galal Yafai gets one final huge cheer from the fans as his name is announced in the ring.

It is a huge moment for him but he looks cool and calm as he prepares to make his pro debut.

The first round is under way.

Huge ovation for Galal Yafai with a lot of travelling Brummies in attendance. He has all the tools to become a superstar in the sport.

The 29-year-old won gold in Tokyo last summer and kicks off his professional career with a 10-rounder and for the WBC international flyweight belt – a huge statement on debut.

He says he is in no rush to be fast-tracked in the professional ranks, but is already sparring the likes of IBF champion Sunny Edwards and, from what I hear, those are competitive spars.

His brother Kal (great name) is a former WBA super-flyweight champion. His other brother Gamal held the European super-bantamweight title. But I have a feeling the youngest sibling is the best of the lot.

  9. 'He'll want to take me off my perch'published at 20:20 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2022

Galal Yafai is coming up against an experienced opponent who has won 10, lost four and drawn one.

"He's Mexican, so you know he isn't going to lie down," he said.

"I'm the golden boy and he'll want to take me off my perch. It should make a good fight."

Any moment now Olympic champion Galal Yafai will make his professional debut, and the Birmingham boxer has already made a huge statement in the flyweight division before even entering the ring.

Most debutants transition into the professional ranks with a four-round bout, Yafai will be fighting a 10-rounder against Carlos Bautista for the WBC International title.

"I didn't want to go slowly on debut like everyone else," the 29-year-old - who won gold at flyweight in Tokyo last summer - told BBC Sport. "I'm fit and and ready for it."

Promoter Eddie Hearn, speaking to DAZN: "That was one of the most stunning things I have seen.

"It was like something out of a Rocky movie. It was not human what Jordan Gill did there. He never quit."

In an absolutely remarkable fight, Jordan 'The Thrill' Gill lived up to his name with a sensational ninth-round knockout win over Karim Guerfi to capture the European featherweight title.

Gill was boxing well until he was unexpectedly floored by the experienced Frenchman in the seventh round.

Guerfi continued the onslaught in the next two rounds, with Gill pinned to the corner, before the Cambridgeshire fighter - out of nowhere - unleashed an overhand night and Guerfi hit the canvas. There was no count from the referee as the medics ran on. Gill himself was on unsteady legs while celebrating. Both men, thankfully, were OK as they left the ring.

Unbelievable fight which really brought the crowd alive.

The thousands or so in attendance at the O2 Arena have just been treated to a fight on the undercard that would not have looked out of place in a Rocky film.

Jordan Gill looked down and out against Karim Guerfi but pulled off an epic turnaround to win with just one second of the ninth round left. I'll let our man ringside tell your more...

Cast your mind back to 2018 when Okolie was booed out of Wembley Stadium after a frustrating performance against Matty Askin for the British Cruiserweight belt. There was a lot of fouling and holding (with Okolie deducted three points) and huge question marks placed on his world-level credentials.

Just two and a half years later, he’s world champion and one of Britain's finest. You can credit Okolie’s self-belief and hard work for the turnaround, but kudos must go to trainer Shane McGuigan who has refined his fighter’s style and turned him into a knockout machine.

    Good evening!

The undercard action at the O2 Arena is already well under way, with the main event due around 21:00 GMT.

This is, on paper, Lawrence Okolie's toughest test to date, with Michal Cieslak having won 21 professional bouts, with the only loss a world-title challenge against Congo's WBC champion Ilunga Makabu in 2020.

He has also knocked out 15 of those 21 opponents he has beaten so cannot be underestimated.

A bit of boxing on a Sunday night is a rare treat for boxing fans and even better that it promises to be belter.

WBO cruiserweight champion Lawrence Okolie is staging the second defence of his title against Poland's Michal Cieslak.

There's plenty on the line for Okolie, but success tonight will move him closer to unification fights and then, potentially, the transition to heavyweight.
