  1. Goodbye!published at 00:02 Greenwich Mean Time 27 March 2022

Well, that was fun. For Josh Warrington and his adoring city of Leeds, at least. A battered Kiko Martinez will disagree.

The 31-year-old Briton sensationally knocked out the Spaniard in the seventh round to become a two-time IBF featherweight champion.

Read Kal Sajad's ringside report on how Warrington silenced the doubters in an impressive performance.

Oh, and from Sunday morning you will also be able to watch highlights of the bout on the BBC Sport website.

    Until next time...

  3. 'Warrington going to the US could be Hatton-esque'published at 23:57 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March 2022

Warrington regains IBF world featherweight title

Promoter Eddie Hearn, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, further fuels the fire about Josh Warrington going Stateside.

"Josh has long wanted a trip to America and it would be Ricky Hatton-esque if we could do it. There’s mandatory as well and loads of politics.

"It looked like his career might be over, but he came back and regained the belt. He’s back in control with big nights ahead."

On the atmosphere in Leeds, Hearn adds: "You’ve got to be in a vibrant city that’s’ going to come out and give you that energy. These scenes and pictures go all around the world. The energy, this is what makes the sport and British boxing so great."

  4. Unification fights in touching distancepublished at 23:55 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March 2022

    Kal Sajad
BBC Sport at First Direct Arena

It would have been rather naive for any boxer to look past their next opponent, let alone a fighter challenging for a world title.

But Warrington knew a win tonight would set him up for some lucrative bouts.

Nottingham’s Leigh Wood – who earlier this month spectacularly beat Michael Conlan with a 12th round stoppage when down on the cards – holds the WBA ‘regular’ title. An all-British unification fight, possibly at Leeds United or Nottingham Forest stadiums, is likely.

Warrington – who has fought just once outside of the UK – may decide to take a high profile fight over in the States, potentially against Mexico's WBA ‘Super' champion Leo Santa Cruz. You can expect thousands of fans from Leeds to lap up the away day should that happen.

And then there is that one wrong which Warrington is desperate to put right. A third fight with Mauricio Lara could be on the cards, but is a risky option.

  5. 'I've been here more than Elton John!'published at 23:53 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March 2022

Warrington regains IBF world featherweight title

More reaction from Josh Warrington, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live on what's next: "This is the eleventh time I’ve been here (at Leeds Arena). More than Tom Jones, more than Elton John, more than the Kaiser Chiefs – and I love them!

"I love Elton John to be fair. I got carried away and lost myself. I knew in order to improve I needed to have a stronger mindset. I’ve got carried away with the crowd before and I didn’t want to do that.

"In an ideal I’d love to go to the States. But Leigh Wood’s just become champion. I’d like an away day. I love it here. We’ve been talking about going to the States for so long. There’s options. We can go States, go the City Ground (to fight Wood in Nottingham), I’m sure these will travel with me. I’ll sit down with Eddie Hearn and we’ll see.”

Warrington regains IBF world featherweight title

Nottingham's WBA champion Leigh Wood - a prospective opponent for Warrington next - is ringside working for television and is drafted into the chat.

A blockbuster bout at Nottingham Forest's City Ground is being mooted. Let's hope there are no roadworks on the M1 that night...

But Wood refuses to call out Warrington in the aftermath of one of the Leeds fighter's best wins of his career.

"This is his night, let him enjoy his night and we’ll talk about what’s next."

Lee Allen: Never in doubt as soon he came out like that in that first round.

Luke Whitehouse: Overrated, beat a decent European level fighter in Martinez who's now been beat 10 times. Shocking how he leads with the head and doesn't get pulled for it. Any decent world level fighter will smash him.

Iffy: What a nasty combo at the end wow!

  8. 'There is no place like this in the world'published at 23:41 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March 2022

Warrington regains IBF world featherweight title

More from Josh Warrington's ring interview: "We might not do the same numbers as the big boys - the AJs and the Furys - but I’d rather have an arena full of these lot than a 100,000 tourists any day of the week.

"There is no place like this in the world, never mind the country.

"I know I’m not everybody’s favourite cup of tea - Yorkshire tea - but when I’m on it and these turn out, there’s nothing like it in the world. We do alright and we’re not bad. Love you Leeds.”

    What next for Josh Warrington?

"Some bread and butter pudding, a cheeseburger and a pint with this lot. Let's have a party!" he says before addressing the more serious business of the title defence.

"An away day - that's what this lot want."

In the middle of the ring, Warrington can barely talk after taking a whack on the jaw.

"Listen I've got my belt back. It wasn't just for me, not just my wife and kids, but for all this lot that supported me," he tells the Leeds crowd.

A jubilant rendition of Leeds United anthem 'Marching on Together' rings out of the First Direct Arena.

Josh Warrington, as the song goes, has had his ups and down. Ups and down!

But this lot will be with him until the world stops going round and Warrington's career is not stopping going round yet.

Former world champion on BBC Radio 5 Live

The smartest performance I’ve probably ever seen from Josh Warrington. He was getting up close. The best performance at 31 years of age. I was getting mad at Kiko’s corner, throw the towel in! Kiko was walking to the round on unsteady legs for the last three rounds and they didn’t even look to throw in the towel.

    Martinez v Warrington II

"Once again the IBF featherweight champion of the world!" screams the ringmaster.

Josh Warrington's beam is wider than the River Aire. The Leeds Arena erupts in unison.

All that work, all that training, all came out when it really mattered.

Josh had to take risks in the first round, he had to leave an impression and get inside what Kiko was doing. It was just about a punch-perfect display. A flawless performance from Josh.

    Martinez v Warrington II

WHAT A NIGHT FOR JOSH WARRINGTON!!

It's all over! The Leeds Warrior goes to town on Kiko Martinez on the ropes, blows raining down on the Spaniard from all angles.

The referee steps in - he has to - and Warrington combusts further through incredulous joy.

    Brilliant.

Again, Martinez comes out for the round before being directed back to his corner for a clean-up job.

Warrington lands a sweet right hand after 50 or so seconds. Then another. Is this the chance?

    Martinez v Warrington II

Warrington lands a couple of body shots as the clock counts down. Martinez's face, covered in blood, has already had enough pummelling.

Halfway through (in theory) and it's been all Leeds.

  20. Round sixpublished at 23:21 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March 2022

    Martinez v Warrington II

Warrington will be leading every round on most scorecard, I'm sure.

Concentration is etched across his face as he clocks every move from the Spaniard.

Martinez, though, has a heck of a right hand. If he unleashes that in a timely manner then the fight could still yet change direction...
