Baumgardner beats Mayer by split decision

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Alycia Baumgardner: "It was easier than I expected but she ran into my gameplan.

"I kept clocking her every time she was coming in. She knew what the right hand was going to do and I kept the jab pumping.

"I'm the unified champion of the world. I won, that's all that matters.

"She isn't getting a rematch, I'm going after Choi [Hyun-mi] for the undisputed."

  13. You about to get schooled - Shieldspublished at 22:29 British Summer Time 15 October 2022

    Shields v Marshall

And it continued into their latest new conference, in which Claressa Shields promised to "school" Savannah Marshall.

Neither woman backed down during verbal exchanges, with Shields telling Marshall: "You about to get schooled.

"I'm about to Sugar Ray Leonard her."

Shields and Marshall, both undefeated in 12 fights, have known each other for the best part of a decade having met at the 2012 World Championships.

Savannah's win over Shields on that occasion remains the only defeat the WBA, IBF and WBC champion has suffered as a fighter.

"She's a bum," Shields insisted. "I'm about to show everybody that there's levels. She thinks I'm still 17, I'm 27. You about to learn."

Barely enough time to let that result sink before the main event.

And there's plenty of beef between Claressa Shields and Savannah Marshall, going back to their first meeting in the amateurs in 2012, in which Marshall handed Shields her only defeat.

Just look at how the original news conference went last month, before the fight was postponed following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

There's a nice gesture at the start of the final round as Mikaela Mayer and Alycia Baumgardner touch gloves.

Baumgardner landed some more big shots but it just feels like Mayer has had more control and consistency throughout.

Has she done enough to stretch her unbeaten record and become the unified super featherweight champion?
