Lawrence Okolie beats David Light by unanimous decision

Boxxer promoter Ben ShaIom on BBC Radio 5 Live: "It's what I expected because he's been out for 13 months.

"David Light is a very tough guy and I think Lawrence boxed well at times. He could have got him out of there in at least three rounds.

"For me, he had to take this fight because it was a mandatory. Now we can move to Richard Riakporhe and a unification fight. I can't see a cruiserweight coming near to him to be honest.

"After 13 months out and a complete change in trainer it's a job well done."

  4. 'A year out has an impact'published at 23:28 Greenwich Mean Time 25 March 2023

Lawrence Okolie beats David Light by unanimous decision

WBO cruiserweight champion Lawrence Okolie on BBC Radio 5 Live: "I need to be back immediately. The year out of the ring does have an impact.

"I felt springy in the ring but it's different when you face someone who is ready to put it all on the line.

"I've brushed off the cobwebs and I'm ready for what is next."

"I felt like the whole build up to this one came with a different pressure. People were calling me out and there were promotional disputes behind the scenes.

"I'm the champion so there's a lot of pressure outside of the ring.

"I'm proud of myself for getting the victory against someone who wanted to change their life."

Lawrence Okolie beats David Light by unanimous decision

WBO cruiserweight champion Lawrence Okolie on BBC Radio 5 Live: "I'd give it a five out of 10 because I felt rusty.

"I was trying to work the jab and I started to get a bit tired which isn't like me. After 13 months out of the ring and everything I've been through it was hard to get going.

"I hurt him several times but I just couldn't find those finishing shots.

"It would have been hard for me to get through that without SugerHill drilling certain instructions and forcing me to dig deep. It's easy to give up on yourself when it gets tough.

"He was tough and I should have known. I was throwing everything I had at him but I had to manage my fitness."

Lawrence Okolie beats David Light by unanimous decision

WBO cruiserweight champion Lawrence Okolie on Sky Sports: "I'd give the performance a five or a six.

"I wasn't sure If I'd feel a bit of ring rust but I definitely did.

"David Light was extremely tough and he had a good tactic of moving to his right so I couldn't get to work.

"It was tough but at the end of the day, it's just an excuse to get better.

"I always believe I can get people out in rounds seven to nine but he was tough to catch and I couldn't really get my timing.

    "I will fight anyone.

"If they watch me and think I'm rubbish then come and find out. There's no point talking from outside of the ring. If they beat me then well done but if not I'll carry on winning."

The heart and determination of Light is unquestionable.

    Okolie v Light

    Josh Taylor
WBO light-welterweight champion on BBC Radio 5 Live

I don't want to sound critical but it is turning into a typical Lawrence Okolie-type fight.

It has been awkward and ugly on the eye. He is winning but it doesn't look great and he appears to be tiring a bit too.
