  2. 'He's meant to be the bogeyman in this division'published at 00:05 British Summer Time 23 April 2023

New IBF super-featherweight champion Joe Cordina on BBC Radio 5 Live: “I knew he’s a tough fighter. He’s hard, he’s rugged. I’ve left no stone unturned in this camp.

"Tony [Sims] will tell you. There’s time in camp where I’ve questioned myself but I’ve answered those questions.

"There was no chance he’s beating me tonight.

"Yeah it was hard, I got through it. I know how tough I am. I know how hard I work. I can box, I can fight, I can do it all.

“That was the thing, I hurt him and thought he couldn’t have recovered. I could hear him making these noises.

"I thought I got him but I’ve gone back out and he’s coming back at me again.

"We know how tough he is. I knew how good I am. If he come on strong, knew I could move him.

"He’s meant to be the bogeyman to everyone in this division. He’s strong, he’s tough but I wanted to show I can stand there and have it with him.”

Joe Cordina had to go through things he had never done in his life. Rakhimov left everything in the ring. He is in tears, in despair, all it takes is one round, one knockdown it changes how you feel what defines you.

Rakhimov seems a bit subdued, Freddie Roach does not seem very impressed, one of those judges made Cordina lose nine rounds.

That was a bruising, bloody, savage, brutal fight. I didn't like the body language at the end, I was convinced Rakhimov was going to get the decision.

What a contest indeed. In the last round Joe Cordina looked classy, I think that is the round that edged the fight. I have it 6-6, but with that knockdown early on proving crucial. It was so much harder than I expected.

That's it. Cordina dances around the ring in the final seconds... has he done enough though?

He looked to start really strongly and has definitely left his mark on the face of Rakhimov but the champion has ended the fight with the greater output.

I lost count of how many uppercuts Cordina landed in that round. He had success early and continued to fall back on it.

Rakhimov also had his moments though.
