  3. No change in approach for Woodpublished at 22:01 British Summer Time 27 May 2023

    Lara v Wood 2

Leigh Wood says he has resisted making any significant changes to his approach to the Mauricio Lara rematch as he now looks to become a two-time world champion.

"My attitude is always the same," he said. "It's fight and improve - and that goes for if you win, lose or draw.

"From that loss I have improved, from three wins before that I'm improved.

"It's the same mindset - what did I do wrong, what can I do better and how can I get better? That is what we have addressed in the gym.

"It's a difficult sport, you can't be a sponge because there are a lot of negative people and negativity around it, with people trying to tell you what you can't do."

Wood said he will stick to the "same principles" from the first fight, but he will take "a different approach" to dealing with the hard-hitting Lara this time.

"I want to make it so clear-cut this time," he added.

"It will be a gulf in the entire approach and the difference between me and him is going to look levels apart on the night, I think."

Former world champion Kell Brook is an attendance, along with current Boxxer stars Joshua Buatsi, Richard Riakporhe and Adam Azim.

After a day of sunshine on the coastal town, many Bournemouthians (the collective name for people from Bournemouth, I've been informed) made their way to the stadium.

It was two-thirds full by 20:00 BST, a rarity for a boxing event. They were in full voice to cheer on local boy Lee Cutler against Stanley Stannard. The super-welterweight repaid the support with a points win.

As sunset hit, the stadium was almost close to full capacity.

  7. Wood keen to 'put it right' in second Lara meetingpublished at 21:49 British Summer Time 27 May 2023

    Lara v Wood 2

Leigh Wood had appeared to be in control of their initial fight, landing hits with ease for a number of rounds before Mauricio Lara ended it with a brilliant left hook that floored him in the seventh.

The hometown favourite was quick to get up off the canvas, but with Wood clearly hurt his trainer Ben Davison threw in the towel.

Wood says he looks back at the fight "with frustration" having been ahead on the scorecards at the time of the stoppage.

"I was doing the right things, I did what I practiced, I stuck to my gameplan and I made a little mistake and paid the price - it cost me the fight," Wood added.

"But I've got the chance now to put it right."

  10. Pressure on Okolie to entertainpublished at 21:45 British Summer Time 27 May 2023

    Okolie v Billam-Smith

Lawrence Okolie was underwhelming in his points win over New Zealander David Light just two months ago.

It was the Londoner’s first outing under SugarHill Steward. Steward, who also trains Tyson Fury, is credited for instilling the 'Kronk' style of boxing - aggressive and on the front foot - into his boxers.

But Okolie – as he has done in previous fights – reverted to type and at times grappled and wrestled his way to victory.

At Wednesday’s news conference, promoter Ben Shalom said the pressure is on for Okolie to deliver a fan-friendly fight.

Harry Redknapp, who played for and managed Bournemouth during his career, is ringside tonight and is loving the atmosphere at a ground close to his heart.

"We love it, brilliant night," he tells Sky Sports.

"Look how they've sold it out, 15,000 people here and the atmosphere is amazing.

"It is going to be a tough fight with two good fighters."

  12. Sombrero present motivates challenger Woodpublished at 21:36 British Summer Time 27 May 2023

    Lara v Wood 2

    Mauricio LaraImage source, .

A red sombrero has sat above the ring in Leigh Wood's training gym since he lost his world title to Mauricio Lara.

On a black backdrop, it stands out like a beacon. He sees it as motivation.

The hat was a gesture of appreciation that the Mexican gave the British boxer in the changing rooms after he took the WBA featherweight title from Wood in his home city of Nottingham in February.

Little did Lara know that it would the most powerful gift he could give Wood after landing the biggest blow of the 34-year-old Brit's career.

Every punch thrown, drop of sweat produced, moment of pain endured and breath taken by Wood in that gym in Essex - for what has been the longest pre-fight training camp he has put himself through - has happened in front of that wide brimmed hat.

Wood now faces the man - that gave him the sombrero and seized his belt - at Manchester's AO Arena.

"It's a reminder for me," he told BBC East Midlands Today. "It's a reminder in the gym to give 100% and not to switch off. I just look up and remind myself that I'm not tired, that I've come to win, to get my belt back."

Chris Billam-Smith speaking to Sky Sports from his changing room: "This is what it's been all about, my whole professional career leading to this. I'm enjoying it."

Billam-Smith, a huge Bournemouth fan, is asked about whether the Cherries' players will be watching tonight: "The lads will be in the hotel watching me, they'll be getting focused on tomorrow but hopefully watching tonight."

  14. Friends or foes?published at 21:31 British Summer Time 27 May 2023

    Okolie v Billam-Smith

Chris Billam-Smith and Lawrence Okolie’s relationship status is, erm, complicated.

When the fight was first announced, the former gym-mates referenced their friendship. During the build-up, they claimed they were never friends but work colleagues. At the news conference and weigh-in this past week, they suggested they were friends but not best buds.

While it gave a good narrative to promote the fight, whether they were pals or not is irrelevant now.

What we can say is Billam-Smith probably knows Okolie’s strengths and weaknesses better than anyone else, and vice-versa.

  15. Harper retains world titlepublished at 21:31 British Summer Time 27 May 2023

In Manchester, England's Terri Harper has just retained her WBA World Super-Welterweight Championship with a unanimous points win over Ivana Habazin.

Harper had been due to fight Cecilia Braekhus in Dublin earlier this month on the undercard of the Chantelle Cameron v Katie Taylor bout, but her opponent withdrew because of illness.

The win takes Harper's record to 14 victories, one draw and one defeat from her 16 bouts.

"I'm glad to get in there and do the job I was supposed to do last week," Harper told DAZN.

"I want to thank my opponent for coming out and giving me a fight.

"I felt she was a bit slower, but she was strong but I just needed to get busy."

  17. Heavy Lara stripped of world titlepublished at 21:23 British Summer Time 27 May 2023

    Lara v Wood 2

Mexico's Mauricio Lara has been stripped of his WBA featherweight belt after he was unable to make the weight for his title fight against Leigh Wood.

Wood made the limit and promoter Eddie Hearn confirmed the bout would go ahead, with only the English fighter eligible to win the title in Manchester.

After a weight check on Wednesday, the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) raised concerns about how heavy the champion was as he tried to make the nine-stone limit.

The BBBofC did not want Lara cutting weight below 9st 2.5lbs, which resulted in the 25-year-old stopping his weight cut and tipping the scales at 9st 3.8lbs on Friday.

Wood, 34, remains eligible to win the belt he lost to Lara in February if the rematch goes ahead.

The Englishman was stopped in the seventh round of their first contest.

  18. Will home support play a part?published at 21:19 British Summer Time 27 May 2023

    Okolie v Billam-Smith

    Kal Sajad
BBC Sport at Vitality Stadium, Bournemouth

The contest is taking place at a Premier League football club’s stadium. That can be slightly misleading in that the capacity at AFC Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium tonight is 15,000.

Nevertheless, it’s a great turnout for home fighter Chris Billam-Smith, a man who by his own admission did not have a stellar amateur career and was not picked by many to be a future world champion.

Okolie says he does not feel the pressure of entering the lion’s den. “He’s not a lion,” he told me in a matter-of-fact way when I asked the question earlier this week.

  19. Conlan's best chance?published at 21:18 British Summer Time 27 May 2023

Luis Alberto Lopez v Michael Conlan

    Andy Gray
BBC Sport NI at the SSE Arena

Promoter Bob Arum may feel that this fight isn't 'make or break' for Michael Conlan, but that's not the approach the Belfast fighter has been taking this week.

He earlier said his "whole life" is on this bout as he looks to become a world champion for the first time, acknowledging he won't be in the sport forever.

With the vocal home crowd, mood from the camp and his experience from the Leigh Wood fight, there is a feeling that this could be the 31-year-old's best chance at fulfilling his dream.

  20. 'A left hook from the heavens' - what happened in the first fightpublished at 21:14 British Summer Time 27 May 2023

    Lara v Wood

    Back in February...

Leigh Wood's reign as WBA featherweight champion ended with the Briton losing in devastating fashion to hard-hitting Mauricio Lara in Nottingham.

The 34-year-old seemed to be in control of the fight and was landing with ease through rounds three to six, before Lara unleashed a sensational left hook in the seventh.

Wood hit the canvas and bravely got back to his feet. But clearly hurt, his trainer Ben Davison threw in the towel.

The defeat was Wood's third in a 29-fight career, while Mexican Lara won his maiden world title.

"Congratulations to Mauricio Lara, he's great fighter," Wood told DAZN afterwards. "I made a mistake and paid for it."

Wood was up on all three judges' scorecards at the time of the stoppage.

"Well done to Leigh Wood for taking a fight like this - everyone knows how dangerous Mauricio Lara is," promoter Eddie Hearn said.

"I thought Leigh was cruising that fight, won four rounds on the spin, but Mauricio Lara came with a left hook from the heavens."
