Vargas v Ball ends in split decision draw

Nick Ball and promoter Frank Warren have just been speaking in the ring after hearing that result.

Warren is adamant that his man picked up the win. He has promised to go after a rematch to try and set the record straight.

    Full interview incoming.

Vargas v Ball ends in split decision draw

I thought Nick Ball had done enough from round seven onwards to get the win. It was a slow start but he claimed two knockdowns in the second half of the fight.

Ball was looking to become the first Briton to hold the WBC featherweight title since Prince Naseem Hamed in 1999.

    Vargas v Ball

    WOW!

    The scorecards are in.

    114-112 Vargas.

    116-110 Ball.

    113-113.

That explains why it was taking so long to get the results.

    Vargas v Ball

It's taking a while for the cards to be totted up here.

The second half of that fight seemed pretty comprehensive, I'm not sure why this is taking so long.

    Vargas v Ball

Ball might even be leading in this final round but he isn't taking his foot off the gas.

The Liverpudlian would love a stoppage.

Vargas is trying to stay out of the way but the attack is relentless from Ball.

Nice left hand just before the bell from Ball.

We might have another British world champion...

I thought Rey Vargas looked hurt for the last 10 seconds when he got up in the last round.

  7. Round elevenpublished at 22:23 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March

    Vargas v Ball

It was a clean right as Vargas backed up to ropes.

All credit to Ball, he was trailing on the cards at the midway point and he's picked up two knockdowns since then.

  8. Round eleven - knockdownpublished at 22:22 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March

    Vargas v Ball

This fight is so unorthodox at times.

Some of the shots that Ball, in particular, is landing are coming from very strange angles. That's due to the height difference, of course, but he's kind of ducking under the guard and coming up the middle to find Vargas' chin.

That's a night left hook from Vargas.

OH! Vargas is down again. And this time it is clean.

    Vargas v Ball

Great left hand from Ball, it didn't land as cleanly as the ones we saw in round seven and eight but still finds a home.

Some good work into the body from Vargas but those shots don't seem to be taking too much out of Ball's tank.

Vargas' output has definitely dropped as this fight has gone on.

Vargas looks a bit wobbly as he heads back to the corner.

Ball knows he's hurt Vargas before and he can do it again.

  12. Round ninepublished at 22:15 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March

    Vargas v Ball

Ball hasn't been able to have as much success in this round.

It's back to the kind of pattern we saw early when he was charging in but finding himself too close to really do any meaningful work.

Vargas seems to have recovered after a rocky couple of rounds. The Mexican just needs to avoid a fire fight to get through this contest.

Nick Ball with all of the effort and the energy but not quite the punch success.

  14. Round eightpublished at 22:11 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March

    Vargas v Ball

That knockdown came at right at the end of the round and it was very messy.

Ball had pushed Vargas and then caught him with the left.

Referee didn't seem to catch the push, which would have ruled out the knockdown.

  16. Round eight - knockdownpublished at 22:10 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March

    Vargas v Ball

There's not much a response in this round from Vargas. Is he still a little cloudy after taking damage in round seven?

Vargas is down!!! Ball catches him with a left hook.

I think we might have underestimated and undersold Rey Vargas a little bit.

  19. Round sevenpublished at 22:06 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March

    Vargas v Ball

The pair both step forward and they may have clashed heads, that's certainly what Vargas is claiming as the referee separates them and he walks away touching his forehead.

A nice body and head commination from Vargas and now he complains that he is caught by a forearm.

Vargas is stumbling! He's caught by a right hand from Ball.

Vargas quickly gathers himself and fire back but Ball catches him with another left and Vargas is unsteady on his feet.

Is this a turning point in the fight

Ohhhhhh! There's a shot after the bell and the pair square up. It's getting tasty.

  20. Round sixpublished at 22:02 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March

    Vargas v Ball

Ball attacks the head of Vargas and the Mexican stoops his head down low before falling to the canvas. Again, not a knockdown.

Ball seems to be head-hunting in this round, he keeps stepping in with a left to the chin then trying to loop his right hand over the top but it's not finding a home.

And Vargas is on his knee again. This is becoming a bit too much.

Now it's better from the champion as he lands a flurry of shots to the body of Ball.

Another really tight round as we reach the midway point of this 12 round contest.
