  2. Doohan crash as Suzuka practice stopped four timespublished at 08:25 British Summer Time

Alpine's Jack Doohan suffered a high-speed crash as Friday practice at the Japanese Grand Prix was punctuated by four red-flag stoppages.

The Australian was uninjured in the crash, which initial impressions suggested was caused by the DRS overtaking aid still being open as he entered the 160mph first corner.

Alpine have not commented on the cause of the incident, saying they are "assessing" it.

Doohan's was the first of four incidents that led to the session being stopped, two of which were for the grass catching fire beside the track.

McLaren's Oscar Piastri ended up fastest from team-mate Lando Norris.

That was a very strange session with a variety of red flags in there.

Disappointment for Jack Doohan and the Alpine team as they now hope to be able to get the car all fixed up for tomorrow.

Delight for Oscar Piastri though as he sorted his problems out from first practice.

It will be busy times at Alpine as they look to get Jack Doohan's car ready for the weekend.

It hasn't yet been confirmed whether he himself will be fit enough to continue.

There was just 0.049s between the two McLarens in second practice but they were pretty clear of the rest, with Isack Hadjar third quickest but four tenths off the McLarens.

The winners so far from today are McLaren, who are looking in good shape around this circuit.

Lando Norris topped the timesheet for first practice, with Oscar Piastri leading the way in second practice.

Four red flags in that session, which prevented teams from getting some proper race simulation runs in.

The wind caused more problems than expected as it blew the sparks from underneath the cars on to the very dry grass, resulting in two of those four red flags.

Thirty-six minutes of this session have been lost to red flags.

Teams have not had much time to get long runs in, so could make things interesting on Sunday.

We said the wind had picked up and it seems that has blown the sparks on to the grass, resulting in a fire.

Crew with fire extinguishers have emerged now to put it out, but we've only got about 10 minutes left here.

  17. Postpublished at 07:48 British Summer Time

What is going on? No crash this time but it looks like sparks from the cars have resulted in a dry patch of grass by the track to start smouldering.

  18. red flag

Several drivers have had a spell at the top but it is Lando Norris quickest of all now with 1:28.163.

    BUT there's another red flag!

  19. 'The DRS was open'published at 07:46 British Summer Time

The DRS was open on Jack Doohan's crash. In F2 or F3, you would close that moments before braking. In F1 they can get away with cutting that margin even finer but it still needs to be closed before you hit the brakes for the corner. It does look like the DRS was open ever so slightly.
