That is the end of the England news conference. Thanks for joining us. Goodbye.

  2. 'Door open' to players not in squadpublished at 19:02 BST

    England

England manager Thomas Tuchel on what the players not in the squad should be feeling: "The hunger to come back. The door is always open. We will always have trouble choosing. For a football nation like England we have a pool of talented players and we have to make a selection. So the ones in camp should feel first of all privileged but they should also feel the hunger to keep the shirt.

"The ones who are not with us should also have the hunger to be with us when the next opportunity is and this is always through behaviour, through performance. The door is always open."

England manager Thomas Tuchel: "I was at a club in Germany, we had a similar stadium [with a running track]. It's very unusual. The pitch looked very good from far. It's unusual, not more, not less. There are no excuses. This should not hold us back. It's the beauty of qualifiers - playing in stadiums you usually wouldn't visit."

England manager Thomas Tuchel on what he'd say to the Latvia players if he was their coach: "Haha. It can be a very nice role to play as the underdogs, there are less expectations.

"The underdog mentality will help the Latvia team tomorrow. I think they will try and implement the spirit that they have nothing to lose. The longer they hang in there will create frustration.

"On the other side we will demand high rhythm and high physicality in the game that hopefully your team cannot cope with us."

  5. 'I don't know which team I will pick'published at 18:56 BST

    England

England manager Thomas Tuchel: "I don't know which team I will pick, I have not decided yet. All of the players deserve [to be in the team]. The spirit and the momentum is clearly there. The players are fully focused, they trained with a lot of quality, you can sense it. Everyone has made an impact and made themselves available.

"I don't think we can go too wrong with the choices. But the focus is building a strong team, playing a team that's used to playing with each other to put in a strong performance to win an away game in a World Cup qualifier."

England manager Thomas Tuchel: "This will be a long break [for meaningful games, if England beat Latvia]. It is what it is. My thoughts are not about November now because it will change a lot if we can fix qualification or not.

"I expect a performance that makes us deserved winners. I know it's never guaranteed to win football matches. Being unlucky is a big part of the game. We expect a top performance. Full focus on tomorrow."

England manager Thomas Tuchel is asked how many Latvian players he knows past or present: "I have to say I didn't know a lot of players. You watch matches when you analyse a team. Maybe I don't know all their names if you ask me to write them down. But I know their numbers and how they play.

"Our full-backs want to know how their wing-backs control the ball. The central defenders want to know how the striker controls the ball."

  8. 'We want to put in a performance that we will be happy with'published at 18:51 BST

    England

England manager Thomas Tuchel on facing a weaker opponent: "It's the same preparation. It's the same amount of meetings. It's the same set-up. It's very important to prepare in the same manor as you would prepare any opponent. Of course we are aware we are the favourites. We expect a win, but we need to be prepared of how to win, where to find the spaces. We demand the respects of the game.

"We expect a deep block in a 4-5-1, maybe a 3-5-2, we need to have answers to that. We don't want to get away with 80 or 90%. We want to put in a performance that we will be happy with."

Jordan Pickford's growing maturity as a character and goalkeeper is demonstrated in his outstanding performances for Everton and England.

He recorded a record eighth clean sheet for England against Wales, but he quickly emphasised team comes first and has set his sights on a ninth shut-out here in Riga tomorrow.

There were suggestions Thomas Tuchel was looking closely at his goalkeeping options when he took over as England head coach in January.

No need for Tuchel to even think about England's goalkeeping position any more. Pickford it the undisputed, and deserved, first choice.

England manager Thomas Tuchel: "I saw that [the team playing differently] even against Andorra at home. Maybe people outside expected more than 2-0 and underestimated the defensive performance.

"I saw the commitment in that game in the high press. A significant shift in our attitude and the way we wanted. We want to take the next step. I feel we're building something and going in the right direction. Tomorrow we have to respect our opponents and the circumstances."

  11. Tuchel delight as Kane fitpublished at 18:49 BST

England head coach Thomas Tuchel said "we did the right thing" by not risking captain Harry Kane in the friendly against Wales as he is fit to face Latvia in Riga tomorrow night.

England's talismanic striker has scored a remarkable record of 74 goals in only 109 international goals and he will be looking to add tomorrow as Tuchel's side seek the win that would secure World Cup qualification.

  12. Kane fit to face Latviapublished at 18:47 BST

    England

England manager Thomas Tuchel: "Harry [Kane] can play, he is fit. We did the right thing. I don't see why he should not be able to play 90 minutes. I don't see any obstacles there.

"Ollie [Watkins] left camp unfortunately. It was too painful, he couldn't train. He is in treatment with his club and is trying to prepare for the weekend."

England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford on being set to win his 80th cap: "I don't think much has changed in goalkeeping. For me I was a young 23-year-old lad making his debut against Germany at Wembley. Proudest moment for me and my family.

"But I was a young lad still learning the game, now I've played that many games for England and in the Premier League as well. But you just mature, you learn more about game management and the little tricks as well."

England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford: "It's about the work I put in off the field, having the mindset and mentality. Whether I need to make 10 saves or one save, it is the level I need to be consistent."

  17. 'When called upon, I need to be ready'published at 18:40 BST

    England

England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford on not having much to do in England games: "Every goalkeeper is different. I'm quite vocal. I communicate with my team and that feels like it keeps me in the game, even if the ball's at the other end of the pitch. It's just being switched on constantly. It's something I've worked on and improved on. I should be there when called upon ready to make an action.

"When you play for England it's always an honour. Sometimes you play high level, sometimes not a high level. As a goalkeeper there's nothing better than not making a save and keeping a clean sheet. But, when called upon, I need to be ready. I need to be in that moment. That's probably the hardest part when you haven't had those actions. But that's what I've trained all week for."

  18. Postpublished at 18:40 BST

England keeper Jordan Pickford: "It'll be a great achievement. It will be my fifth major tournament in a row. There's been a couple of games we haven't scored as much as everyone wanted. We have to get the job done tomorrow. It will great to get the job done, it's about getting momentum."

England keeper Jordan Pickford on the first Latvia game: "It was a good game. Reece scored a good free-kick. We had to be aware of the threat from Latvia. It was tight. Hopefully tomorrow we can get on the front foot and get at them."
