Track evolution is huge around here, especially because it rained so heavily last night. We are going to see the cars getting faster and faster and then as the air cools, the track temperature goes down. Tonight we are going to see some really quick times on the soft tyres.

"Everyone is just in the way the whole lap. Car is much better though."

  3. Improvement for Verstappenpublished at 10:54 British Summer Time

Max Verstappen said after Friday's sessions that the grip levels in general were really difficult for the Red Bull, and the kerbs and bumps, which is usually the team's weak spot at Marina Bay, were actually OK.

The Dutchman is 59 points clear of Lando Norris in the championship as we gear up for this weekend's Singapore Grand Prix and he's sitting top of the board currently, on a set of mediums, with a time of 1:32.044.

Team-mate Sergio Perez is just 0.136 seconds behind. Could this be a brighter day for Red Bull?

It's weird, we come to some race tracks and Mercedes are super comfortable from the off and then some weekends they are just totally lost.

The Alpine phone is ringing early and it's Esteban Ocon, who informs his pit wall he is struggling with instability as he takes the medium tyres out for a spin.

At the top of the timesheets, Oscar Piastri is quickest on the yellow compound with a 1:32.957, and the Australian tells his McLaren team the car already feels better than yesterday.

  6. What tyres are being used in Singapore?published at 10:46 British Summer Time

Only the softest compounds in the Pirelli range will do for this latest street circuit test of the 2024 season.

Teams can choose from the C3 (white, hard), the C4 (yellow, medium) and the C5 (red, soft), with the green intermediates and blue wet-weather tyres also on hand, should the rain arrive in Marina Bay.

Yesterday, Lando Norris' time of 1:30.727 was the quickest set on the soft compound, Charles Leclerc put down the best marker on the mediums (1:31.665) and RB's Yuki Tsunoda clocked the top time on the hard tyre (1:33.582).

OK, fun is over. Time to get back to work.

With the lizard back in the grandstands, cars have headed out on a mixture of medium and soft tyres. The two Saubers of Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu bolting on the red C5s first.

The lizard is in the middle of the track in the second to last corner. There is a red flag for the lizard, it won't be a new one for the marshals.

Fernando Alonso has headed back out and is told on the radio that the track is clear, but there could be a lizard (as we've seen already) somewhere. The two-time world champion replies to his engineer that the little trespasser is right in the middle of circuit.

And now the marshals are chasing it! Wow, it's fast. It looks like Larry has been caught and now he's being placed in a safe spot away from the action.

Singapore is a higher downforce circuit, the tyre temperatures will get hot here, especially the rears, it's got more of a street feel to it.

It looks like we've got a bit of a fight between McLaren and Ferrari, it feels nip and tuck at the moment there.

Red Bull seem to be struggling as we predicted. Yesterday, everyone was running different tyres, so it's hard to get a proper gauge of what is happening.

Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso are the only two drivers out on track - a set of mediums for both - but the circuit has a visitor: a lizard.

Please make it to a safe destination, little guy or girl.

Lewis Hamilton was stunned by how far his Mercedes was off the pace in second practice, telling race engineer Pete Bonnington it was "unbelievable" when informed he was down in P11 and nearly a second away from Lando Norris' best time.

Three-time world champion Max Verstappen didn't fare much better, ending his second hour running four places lower than Hamilton and 1.294 seconds off the top spot.

McLaren are running a special livery in Singapore which celebrates the MP4 era of the team from 1981 to 1996, and it was shown off in all its glory in second practice as Lando Norris was the quickest man on track.

The British driver was 0.058 seconds ahead of Charles Leclerc's Ferrari, with Carlos Sainz finishing third-fastest once again. However, the Spaniard was over six-tenths slower than his former McLaren team-mate.

"I was a hoping to have a much bigger gap which means they’re quick. Ferrari are very, very fast," Norris said after the session.

Towards the end of the hour, George Russell found himself in the barriers at Turn Eight. The Mercedes man was able to reverse out and make his way back to the pits, without his front wing and a damaged nose cone.

Last week's Azerbaijan Grand Prix winner, Oscar Piastri was held in the garage for the start of first practice because of a sticky rear-left tyre. The Australian finally joined the action and put his McLaren sixth between the two RBs of Yuki Tsunoda and Daniel Ricciardo.

Max Verstappen was the only Red Bull-Mercedes driver to finish in the top 10, as team-mate Sergio Perez, along with Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, found the grip levels difficult to overcome.
