Friday began in the daylight with the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc setting the pace before the sun went down.

The Monegasque driver was 0.076 seconds quicker than the McLaren of Lando Norris, with his team-mate Carlos Sainz bringing the other Scuderia home in third place.

Championship leader Max Verstappen was fourth fastest, over three-tenths away from Leclerc's marker, but the Dutchman complained of understeer issues with his Red Bull during the hour.

"It felt good but there is still some work to be done," said Leclerc.

"The car didn’t exactly feel like I wanted so we still have to try and improve it and of course the forecast of the rest of the weekend is a little up and down."
