Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc took pole position at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix for the fourth year in a row as title rivals Max Verstappen and Lando Norris start sixth and 17th.

Norris, who is trying to close a 62-point gap to Verstappen, encountered yellow flags on his final lap in the first session and faces a difficult Sunday.

Verstappen is in better shape but could still manage only sixth fastest as Red Bull continued to struggle for pace compared to their rivals.

Verstappen’s problems - his team-mate Sergio Perez was two places ahead of him in fourth place - provided Norris a perfect opportunity to capitalise.

The Briton’s team-mate Oscar Piastri qualified second to Leclerc and ahead of the second Ferrari of Carlos Sainz.

But Norris’ difficulties in the first session means he will be trying to limit the damage rather than inflict it on the Dutchman.

The front row does have a McLaren on it, but it's Oscar Piastri who will be in prime position to fight Charles Leclerc for the race win, and not team-mate Lando Norris. The Briton has it all to do after exiting qualifying in Q1 and will start P17 in the grid.

For championship leader Max Verstappen, he'll begin his Azerbaijan Grand Prix in sixth place. Can his Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez help him out and ruffle the feathers of the front three from P4?

A reminder that Verstappen leads the drivers' championship from Norris by 62 points, while Red Bull are just eight points ahead of McLaren and 39 points clear of Ferrari in the constructors' title race.

Also keep an eye on Williams' Franco Colapinto in P9 on Sunday. The Argentine is only making a cameo in Formula 1 for the second half of the season but already he's made his first Q3 appearance, and out-qualified a team-mate.

We should be in for a cracker tomorrow, so come back and join us for build-up from 11:15 BST.

Lights out in Baku are at 12:00 BST.

    See you on Sunday!

  4. 'Hopefully we can play a team game to win that race' - Leclercpublished at 14:33 British Summer Time 14 September

More from polesitter Charles Leclerc, who spoke on the potential team game for the race tomorrow, with his team-mate Carlos Sainz starting in third: “It’s the best we could have hoped for. I mean even the left side of the grid is a little bit less grip so first and third is where you want to start, so hopefully we can play a team game tomorrow to win that race.

“It’s going to be a long race, in the past we are very strong at qualifying and struggling a bit in the race. This year, we have a stronger race car so I hope we can finally make it tomorrow.

“Tyre management will be a big thing tomorrow so we’ve got to do a good job, we did a good job in Monza, but we have to reset every race we do so tomorrow is another race with other issues, even though tyre degradation is there, it’s with different tyres so you’ve got to adapt to that. We will do our homework tonight to get ready for tomorrow.”

  5. 'It’s all to play for tomorrow' - Sainzpublished at 14:30 British Summer Time 14 September

Ferraris Carlos Sainz will start the race on the second row in P3. He said after qualifying: “We had a solid qualifying and day in general with the two cars and I think we put ourselves in a very good position ahead of tomorrow.

“I’ve never really been 100% hooked up around here in my career, it’s a track that I tend to struggle with a bit so to be P3 is a good position for tomorrow. My race pace yesterday also seemed strong, so it’s all to play for tomorrow.”

On how difficult it was to keep up with the track evolution, he added: “The track was definitely ramping up a lot and we were getting a lot more grip as the track cools down and the sun goes down.

"It was all about adapting, I found something going into Q3 that gave me a bit more confidence. It probably wasn't the best of the build-up to that Q3 lap but at least I found something that allowed me to put it into the top three which is a decent position for tomorrow."

On the circuit, he said: “If I would have been a bit quicker but it's Baku and I've never been the best version of myself around here."

  6. 'Race pace is good' - Piastripublished at 14:26 British Summer Time 14 September

McLaren's Oscar Piastri, who will start on the front row in P2: "I got a little bit close to the walls on the last lap; just tried to get the most out of it. This track rewards commitment and the last lap in Q3, I knew a had a little less to lose, so just tried to maximise the car.

"It was feeling good all the way through; just didn't maximise it enough in the first part of qualifying but I'm very happy with Q3."

On the team's race pace and whether they can challenge: "I think from where we are starting, yes. But following around here is really tough, we saw yesterday, it was pretty tough once you get behind someone, hopefully get some clean air, which will be good.

"We'll see what we can do. I think our race pace is good, but again, the Ferraris are certainly not slow.

On whether he can go all out for victory tomorrow: "Definitely."

Ferraris Charles Leclerc, who earns his four consecutive pole positions at the Azerbaijan G rand Prix: “It’s one of my favourite tracks of the season, I really like it, it hasn’t been an easy weekend because of the crash in FP1, it didn’t make me lose confidence as I knew that the pace was there, but you’ve got to be back up to speed.

“In Q3 and qualifying it was all about trying to stay as far as possible from the walls and on the last lap I went for it a bit more and the lap time came very nicely.

“The car felt really good and everything felt great, so it’s amazing to be on pole."

Williams team principal James Vowles was straight on the team radio to apologise to Alex Albon for the bizarre incident in Q3 that saw an air fan still attached to his car. The stewards are investigated for an unsafe release, and Vowles adds it will not happen again.

Albon, polite as ever, says no problem and is looking ahead to scoring points tomorrow.

That is a bit of human error and someone has left the cooling fan attached to Albon's car. That is going to cost him because he's not going to get a lap in.

Wow! It was an airbox fan that was left on Alex Albon's car. The Williams man reaches over and manages to pull the bright yellow piece of equipment off himself. Race control are going to look at this after the session.
