I respect the fact that Russell has turned up and is standing up for himself. It was publicly aggressive from Verstappen on Sunday and he didn't need to do that - he'd just won the race. George is not meek and mild. He might have this persona of being a peacekeeper but he would love to be in the fight. He is forthright with what he thinks and will happily have a go at someone when he thinks they have done wrong.

This is what rivalries are about - I like that the shackles are off.

  3. Russell feeling the heatpublished at 13:20 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December

George Russell is having to wrangle in his Mercedes after a small snap of oversteer at Turn Five. A few corners later, his on the radio to his engineer to say his "cockpit is still reasonably toasty".

    "Copy that," comes the reply.

McLaren have been really beaten up and bullied by Verstappen and Red Bull this year. Max has got Lando exactly where he wants. Lando is not coming out and being punchy - he's accepting second best too easily I think. I think Mercedes and Russell will stand up for themselves a lot more, though maybe it will be different next year for Lando.

Have a read of the 12:56 entry and by the show of thumbs, if you were George Russell, would you have taken the seat next to Max Verstappen and tried to thrash things out at the drivers' dinner?

Out on track, Verstappen is having issues with his Red Bull. The four-time world champion is sixth on the timesheets and flags a few problems to his engineer, including saying the "understeer is ridiculous".

I don't know if Verstappen thinks he's above the law, but he pushes the law.

  7. Norris returns to the toppublished at 13:11 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December

The top four at the minute is McLaren-Ferrari-Ferrari-McLaren, with Lando Norris returning to the summit of the timesheets with a 1:24.332 on the medium tyre. Carlos Sainz is next up followed by his team-mate Charles leclerc and the other papaya car of Oscar Piastri.

Verstappen and Russell is a rivalry that has boiled over in public in the last seven days. It has been bubbling away this year. Whereas Lando Norris has been magnanimous about some of Verstappen's sometimes sketchy moves, Russell has stood up as chairman of the GPDA. He is one of the statesman of F1 now, even though he is not actually that old himself. He said after Austin that 19 of the drivers agreed that Verstappen should have got a penalty. They don't see eye to eye.

When you thought the season was coming to a quiet end, the tension is high.

  9. Piastri quickest from Norrispublished at 13:09 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December

The field are out on the medium tyres and it's Lando Norris who is leading the charge with a 1:25.020. McLaren are 21 points ahead of Ferrari in the constructors' championship, with Charles Leclerc carrying a 10-place penalty for the main race, so the odds are in the favour of Norris and team-mate Oscar Piastri, who has actually just gone top by over three tenths.

George Russell is on the radio. "Quite a lot of vibrations in the rack," he tells his Mercedes pit wall.

In the team principals' news conference just before second practice, Red Bull boss Christian Horner fielded a lot of questions about Toto Wolff's comments from Thursday, in particular his line that Horner was like a "yapping little terrier".

"I love terriers. I think they're great dogs," joked Horner. "I've had four of them."

After revealing he had two called 'Bernie' and 'Flavio', he added: "To be called a terrier. Is that such a bad thing? They're not afraid of having to go at the bigger dogs. I'd rather be a terrier than a wolf, maybe."

  14. Russell v Verstappen - what's going on?published at 12:56 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December

    F1 drivers' dinnerImage source, F1

If this whole Max Verstappen versus George Russell ding dong has become a bit confusing, then fear not - F1 correspondent Andrew Benson is here to break down exactly what has gone over between the pair over the past week.

Here's a little snippet from Thursday's drivers' dinner:

Russell was last to turn up. There were two seats left, both next to Verstappen, who waved, said "Hi, George" and indicated for him to sit down.

Russell said hello back then, in what must have been an awkward moment, took one of the seats and moved it away to sit next to team-mate Lewis Hamilton.

It might have been a misjudgement. Had Russell sat down with Verstappen, they would probably have sorted it all out within a couple of minutes.

Charles Leclerc had a sweet moment with brother Arthur at the conclusion of first practice but now the Ferrari driver must face the reality of that 10-place drop for the teams' title decider on Sunday.

Pierre Gasly is driving alongside his new team-mate Jack Doohan this weekend and the Frenchman put on a solid showing to place his Alpine in the top five.

Felipe Drugovich, taking Lance Stroll's Aston Martin out for a spin, finished his hour top of the rookies in ninth. On the other side of the garage, however, Fernando Alonso was far from thrilled with the performance of his car, calling it the "worst ever".

More grid penalties incoming for the last dance of the season.

Alex Albon and Franco Colapinto will join Charles Leclerc in moving down the order from their original qualifying spot.

"Alex and Franco will each take a five-place grid penalty in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix due to the use of additional RNC gearbox components," Williams have confirmed.

The team added: "It’s an unfortunate consequence of the incidents that occurred during last week’s [Qatar] Grand Prix which were beyond Alex and Franco’s control, but we will give it our all to finish the season on a strong note."

Hello again, folks. In the hunt to become 2024 constructors' champions McLaren have been handed the advantage with Charles Leclerc set to drop 10 places for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, after the Italian team fitted a new battery pack during first practice.

Leclerc topped the opening hour at Yas Marina this morning, but his hopes of helping the Scuderia to a first title since 2008 have been dealt a massive blow.

Second practice goes green at 13:00 GMT.

Commentary will be available on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra, BBC Sounds, at the top of this page using the 'listen live' tab and via most smart speakers.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc has been given a 10-place grid penalty for the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix that will decide the constructors' championship between the Italian team and McLaren.

Ferrari have had to fit a new battery pack to Leclerc's car, taking them beyond their permitted allowance for the season.

It is a major blow to Ferrari, who trail McLaren by 21 points in the constructors' championship with a maximum of 44 points available.

Leclerc and team-mate Carlos Sainz said on Thursday that Ferrari really needed a one-two in the race to have their best shot at their own first title since 2008.

McLaren are trying to win the title for the first time since 1998.

There was a nice moment at the end of the session where Charles Leclerc was waving to Arthur in the other Ferrari on track. "I just wanted to say hello to my brother," he told his pit wall.
