"There was so much crowds and he [Alistair Brownlee] seemed to find this quiet place and shouted "Don't give up".

"I saw my coach and he said, "Give it one more try." I got the silver medal in Tokyo and that was amazing but I didn't want to settle.

"I gave 100% and I can be proud of that."

On taking part in the next London Marathon: "For me, London Marathon has been a special day.

"I remember leaning over the barrier as a child and now to have an opportunity to do that is exciting.

"I still have LA [Games] firmly in my sights."

"When I saw the score come up, I forgot I wasn't the last person. So in that moment I knew I had won an Olympic medal and at the time I thought it was gold. So I was reacting to a really happy score and a really happy routine - at least if I didn't become Olympic champion, I knew what it was going to feel like!" - Bryony Page after winning gold at the Paris 2024 to complete her set of an Olympic medal in every colour.

A big name was back on the biggest stage this year as the world’s most decorated gymnast, Simone Biles, returned to the Olympics after her ‘twisties’ troubles at the previous Games. She added team,all-around and vault gold and floor silver to her medal haul in a series of performances in Paris that drew in the A-list crowd.

Her rival – and the only gymnast Biles says had ever truly pushed her – Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade took a stunning floor gold that had Biles and team-mate Jordan Chiles bowing to her on the podium in one of the Games’ iconic moments. Andrade also took all-around and vault silvers and helped Brazil to a first team bronze.

The standout moment for British gymnastics was Bryony Page’s brilliant trampoline gold, which completed her collection of an Olympic medal of every colour.

Britain’s most successful gymnast Max Whitlock bowed out of the sport at the end of the Games, just missing out on a team and pommel horse medal with fourth-place finishes.

But the next generation showed they are ready to take over, with bronze medals for Jake Jarman on floor and Harry Hepworth on vault.

Great Britain have won more triathlon medals than any nation since the sport obtained Olympic status at Sydney 2000 – and that dominance continued in Paris.

Alex Yee's sensational sprint finish to overhaul long-time rival Hayden Wilde and claim Olympic triathlon gold came just two hours after Beth Potter raced to a brilliant bronze in the women's race.

The pair then united with Georgia Taylor-Brown and Samuel Dickinson to win mixed team relay bronze in another dramatic finish later in the Games.

Those successes were achieved despite the uncertainty caused by poor water quality in the Seine, which dominated headlines in the lead up to the Games and forced the men's race to be postponed by one day.

Two months later Yee asserted himself as the world's leading triathlete by winning his first world title with a third-place finish at the World Triathlon Championship Finals in Andalusia, where 2023 women's champion Potter won silver behind France's Olympic champion Cassandre Beaugrand.

It was also a year in which double Olympic triathlon champion Alistair Brownlee announced his retirement from the sport aged 36, following an illustrious career which included triumphs at London 2012 and Rio 2016.
